High school softball: Henley splits key doubleheader, Chiloquin continues hot start, other weekend results

Easter weekend had no shortage of action on the softball diamond, with most Basin teams competing. Here’s how the matchups unfolded.

Friday

Chiloquin 18, Bonanza 3 (Game 1)

Chiloquin 20, Bonanza 2 (Game 2)

Chiloquin (5-0, 3-0) remained the only undefeated 2A/1A Special District 6 team after sweeping a doubleheader with visiting Bonanza (0-10, 0-9). 

The Queens have already reached their most wins in a season since 2019, when they finished 7-12.

Chiloquin travels to Riddle/Days Creek (2-5, 0-3) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Bonanza travels to 2A/1A No. 7 Illinois Valley (8-3, 7-2) at 4 p.m. Tuesday. 

Saturday

Mazama 12, Modoc 2 (5 innings)

Mazama (5-6) snapped a three-game losing streak with its third run-rule win of the season.

The host Vikings scored eight runs with two outs in the bottom of the third inning as Modoc (6-9) issued five walks in the frame–including three in a row at one point. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, junior Bella Pena drove in seniors London O’Brien and Maggie Pizano with a ground ball to left field, ending the game. 

O’Brien pitched all 5 innings and recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts. Mazama’s 12 runs are the second-most the Braves have allowed this season.

Mazama returns to Skyline Conference play, where it sits 1-3, with a trip to 4A No. 6 Phoenix (7-3, 4-2) at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Modoc returns to Shasta Cascade League play, where it sits 4-0, with a doubleheader at Weed (2-15-1, 0-4) starting at 2 p.m. Friday.

4A No. 5 Hidden Valley/New Hope Christian 10, Klamath Union/Crosspoint Christian 0 (6 innings) (Game 2)

Visiting Hidden Valley/New Hope Christian (13-2, 5-1) took sole possession of first place in the Skyline Conference with a pair of run-rule wins over Klamath Union/Crosspoint Christian (3-8, 0-6). 

The Mustangs blew Game 1 open with a six-run third inning after entering the frame with a 1-0 lead. Only four of Hidden Valley/New Hope Christian’s runs were earned; the Pelicans committed five errors. 

In Game 2, the Mustangs scored three runs in each of the first two innings to build an early 6-0 lead. Senior Bailey Sandquist, an Eastern Oregon signee, led off the fifth inning with a home run. Senior Scarlett Gordon, an Iowa Western Community College commit, allowed 1 hit in 6 innings and struck out 11 of the 19 batters she faced. 

Klamath Union/Crosspoint Christian faces 4A No. 9 Henley (9-4, 4-2) at Steen Sports Park at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Hidden Valley/New Hope Christian travels to 3A No. 5 Brookings-Harbor (8-5) at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. 

4A No. 6 Phoenix 6, No. 9 Henley 4 (Game 1)

4A No. 9 Henley 13, No. 6 Phoenix 5 (Game 2)

Visiting Henley (9-4, 4-2) rallied for an important split, ending the day tied with Phoenix (7-3, 4-2) for second place in the Skyline Conference standings.

Pirates junior Destiny Christlieb almost singlehandedly carried her team to a win in Game 1, driving in four runs with a pair of homers while allowing 2 earned runs in 6 innings and recording a season-high 9 strikeouts in the circle. Christlieb went deep to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning and launched a three-run bomb in the fifth to put Phoenix up 6-1 (her third and fourth home runs of the season). The Hornets scored twice in the top of the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate with two outs, but Pirates freshman Rylei Rivero closed the door with a strikeout.

In Game 2, Henley trailed 4-1 entering the fourth inning after Christlieb hit a two-run double in the bottom of the third. The Hornets punched back with a five-run frame; junior Gracie White tied the game with a sac fly after freshman Cozette Venegas drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single, and senior Anna Harper and junior Layli Segura recorded back-to-back RBIs with two outs to give Henley a 6-4 lead. Harper put the game to bed with a two-out grand slam in the top of the seventh inning, her third home run of the year. 

Pirates sophomore Carsyn Sousa hit her second and third home runs of 2025 in the first and seventh innings. Hornets freshman Rylee Hollingsworth picked up her second seven-inning complete-game win in the circle. Henley’s 13 runs are the most Phoenix has allowed this season.

Both teams play at 5 p.m. Wednesday; Henley faces Klamath Union/Crosspoint Christian (3-8, 0-6) at Steen Sports Park, while Phoenix hosts Mazama (5-6, 1-3).
