High school basketball: Mazama boys lose in 4A semifinals, Henley girls advance to fourth-place game

Day 2 of the OSAA 4A basketball state championships at Forest Grove High School saw the Henley girls compete in the consolation round and the Mazama boys compete in the state semifinals. Here’s how both games unfolded Friday.

No. 3 Henley 53, No. 7 Seaside 50

Seaside (14-11) missed a game-tying three at the buzzer as Henley (24-3) advanced to the fourth-place game.

Freshman Makayla Schroeder–who finished with 24 points, 17 rebounds and 5 steals for her 19th double-double of the season–made a go-ahead free throw with just under 51 seconds remaining. Sophomore Prestyn Schade was fouled on a rebound on the ensuing possession and went 2-for-2 from the stripe with less than 14 seconds to go.

The Hornets led 15-5 after the first quarter and 27-18 at halftime. They went up 36-28 on a Schroeder layup with 3:55 left in the third but did not make a field goal the rest of the period as the Seagulls went on a 12-2 run. Henley committed seven turnovers in the last three minutes of the frame, and Seaside took its first lead on a free throw by junior Kylie Keranen with a little more than 35 seconds on the clock.

Trailing 40-38 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Hornets went down by as many as four points before a series of big plays broke in their favor. With 2:41 left in the game, Seaside junior Carly Corder–who led the Seagulls with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals–fouled out, and a Schroeder free throw cut the deficit to 48-46. Schroeder intercepted a pass on the next possession, which led to junior Kennedi Modin banking in a game-tying floater. Modin then took a charge on defense, and Schroeder knocked down a pair of free throws to put Henley up 50-48 with 1:27 remaining.

Corder was one of three Seaside starters to foul out in the fourth quarter; juniors Makenna White and Ella Brenden both picked up their fifth fouls in the final 1:30. One Hornets starter, junior Lily Fussell, also fouled out in the last 90 seconds.

In addition to Schroeder’s monster outing for Henley, senior Anna Harper had 13 points and 8 rebounds; Fussell had 7 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals; Schade had 4 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds; junior Senia Campos had 3 points and 4 rebounds; Modin had 2 points; and senior Bayli Ladner had 5 points and 3 steals.

In addition to Carly Corder’s totals, Seaside junior Mya Feeney had 11 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists; Brenden had 8 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals; junior Lilli Miller had 7 points, 6 steals and 3 rebounds; Keranen had 3 points; White had 2 points; and freshman Allie Corder had 3 rebounds.

The Hornets shot 17-of-53 (32%) from the field, including 0-of-10 from 3-point range, and made 19-of-30 free throws (63%). The Seagulls shot 18-of-44 (41%) from the field, including 1-of-9 from 3-point range, and made 13-of-17 free throws (77%). Henley outrebounded Seaside 46-20, including 25-7 on the offensive glass (resulting in a 22-6 edge in second-chance points), and committed 22 turnovers to the Seagulls’ 21.

Seaside’s season came to an end with the loss. It was the Seagulls’ first state tournament appearance since 2017, and the team graduates only one senior, Maddy Wrege.

Henley faces No. 4 seed La Grande (20-5) in the fourth-place game at 9 a.m. Saturday.

No. 2 Marshfield 65, No. 14 Mazama 43

A 27-5 edge in points off turnovers helped Marshfield (23-3) advance to its first state championship game since 1962 and deny Mazama (15-12) its first-ever appearance.

The Vikings committed 24 turnovers to the Pirates’ seven. Marshfield led 15-6 after the first quarter, 28-13 at halftime and 49-26 after the third quarter.

Mazama struggled mightily from the field in the first half, shooting 6-of-27 (22%), including 0-of-12 from 3-point range. While the Vikings found a groove in the second half–shooting 12-of-23 (52%) from the field, including 5-of-13 (38%) from 3-point range–they couldn’t get the stops they needed to mount a comeback. The Pirates shot 25-of-65 (39%) from the field across both halves, including 5-of-24 (21%) from 3-point range. Marshfield also made 10-of-16 free throws (63%), while Mazama made 2-of-8.

Despite having to contend with 6-foot-8 senior Luke Jackson in the paint, the Vikings outrebounded the Pirates 41-39.

Senior Gabe Nanni led Mazama with 16 points (including three triples), 2 rebounds and 2 blocks; senior Jordan Beals had 9 points and 5 rebounds; senior Ryan Hayden had 6 points and 9 rebounds; freshman Kayden Gannett had 3 points; senior Logan Harrington had 2 points and 2 rebounds; senior Drake Peters, junior Michael Piscitello and sophomore Rison McDonald all had 2 points; senior Dominic Melgoza had 1 point, 8 rebounds and 3 assists; and senior Kai Hunt had 3 rebounds and 2 assists.

For Marshfield, senior Steel Carpenter had 29 points (including three triples and 8-of-9 free throws), 8 rebounds and 2 steals; Jackson had 15 points, 10 rebounds and 2 assists; sophomore Keller Vinyard had 13 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals; freshman Jackson Ainsworth had 5 points, 5 steals and 3 assists; junior Devon Pederson had 3 points; senior Jonah Martin had 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists; and junior Chandler Wyatt had 3 rebounds.

Mazama faces No. 1 seed Cascade (22-4) in the third-place game at 2:15 p.m. Saturday. Marshfield faces No. 5 seed and defending champion Baker (18-8) in the state title game at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
