Wednesday

4A No. 3 Henley 53, 5A No. 5 Summit 49 (Girls)

Henley (12-2) overcame foul trouble and a depth disadvantage to earn one of the biggest regular season wins in program history.

The Hornets have won seven other road games against 5A or 6A opponents dating back to the 2013-14 campaign, but all of those opponents finished their seasons with sub-.500 records. Summit (10-4), which entered Wednesday’s game ranked No. 4 in the OSAA 5A computer rankings, has six wins over 6A squads this season and is regarded as a potential state tournament team.

Similarly to its game at 5A No. 7 Redmond on Jan. 7, Henley jumped out to a 9-0 lead, with the first six points coming from freshman Makayla Schroeder. The Storm answered with a 10-0 run, but the Hornets settled things down enough to take a 12-11 lead at the end of the opening quarter. A 7-0 run gave Henley a 21-14 lead midway through the second before Summit used a 9-0 run to pull ahead 27-24. Junior Lily Fussell scored the last points of the half to cut it to 27-26 at the break.

The Hornets trailed the entire third quarter–with the Storm leading by as much as five–until junior Kennedi Modin threaded a pass to Fussell for a reverse layup that tied the game at 39-39 with 15 seconds left in the period. Summit would never lead again.

Henley went up by as much as six in the fourth quarter, but junior Kalyn Christ hit a three with 2:33 remaining to cut it to 47-45. On the next possession, sophomore Prestyn Schade fired a pass from near the center circle to Fussell in the restricted area. Fussell took a bump from a defender as she caught the ball, then banked in a reverse layup from directly underneath the backboard through additional contact for an and-one opportunity. She made the free throw, giving the Hornets a 50-45 lead with 2:17 to go.

The teams traded empty possessions until Christ drove down the right lane for a layup with just over one minute on the clock. Once again, Fussell answered, making a contested jumper from the left block.

With 16 seconds remaining, senior Kalia Durfee scored through two defenders to make it 52-49. Two missed free throws by Henley gave the Storm a chance to tie the game with 12.2 seconds to go, but they turned the ball over on a double dribble almost immediately after rebounding the second miss. Forced to foul again, Summit sent Schade to the free throw line with 5.5 seconds left, where she made the first shot to all but seal the win.

The game was tightly officiated, with the teams whistled for 17 fouls each (the second-most of the season to be called on Henley). Senior Anna Harper picked up her fourth foul with just under four minutes to go in the third quarter, and Schroeder was called for her fourth with 1:20 left in the game.

Schroeder led the Hornets with 17 points and a career-high 19 rebounds; Harper had 9 points (4 in the fourth quarter), 5 rebounds and 2 assists; Fussell had 9 points, 8 rebounds and 2 steals; junior Senia Campos had 6 points; Schade had 5 points, 7 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals; Modin had 5 points and 2 rebounds; and senior Bayli Ladner had 2 points and 3 rebounds.

Lost River 56, Tulelake 43 (Girls)

A 15-2 run in the third quarter ultimately gave Lost River (8-4) enough separation to stave off a Tulelake (7-10) comeback attempt.

They began the fourth quarter up 46-29 and scored on the opening possession to go up 48-29, but the Honkers put together a 12-0 run to cut the lead to 48-41 with 4:21 remaining.
