History of land surveying program offered
November 21 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
The history of land surveying, and the curious circumstances that led to the creation of a Section 37 in Klamath County, will be discussed in a program set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, at the Klamath County Museum.
“Land Surveyors – Organizing the American West,” will be presented by Joe Young, a professional land surveyor and vice president of the Klamath County Historical Society.
Young will briefly describe the U.S. Public Land Surveying System, and how it was implemented in the Northwest before Oregon achieved statehood in 1859.
The family of William S. Moore, for whom Moore Park is named, will be discussed, along with other names on prominent geographic places such as Fremont, Williamson, Sprague, Drew and Warner.
While virtually all land in the American West is divided into townships comprising 36 square-mile sections, there is a Section 37 that exists in Klamath County. Young will discuss how that came to be.
The presentation, which is free and open to anyone interested, will also discuss the platting of Linkville town and Linkville Cemetery.
The program will be available online via Zoom. To request an invite to view the program, send an email to museumoffice@klamathcounty.org.
