NEWBERG, Ore. – Despite a commanding 18-4 edge in total shots, a late second half goal thwarted an Oregon Tech chance at a season opening victory, as the Lady Owls played George Fox to a 1-1 draw at the Austin Sports Complex.
OIT (0-0-1) dominated the run of play for the majority of the day – including taking all 10 first half shot attempts, but could not break Bruins keeper Emily Rubey.
The Owls capitalized on a foul in the box, with Kiana Jacobson finding the net from the penalty spot with 19 minutes remaining, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. The edge was short-lived, as against the run of play, Alia Villa played a cross from the right side that eluded Tech keeper Sydni Nakamura, finding the top left corner of the net, for the equalizer.
Unfazed, OIT pushed forward in the waning moments – as both Kiah Wetzell, Shalynai Naputi and Kathleen Wyborny had quality chances inside the final five minutes, with a Brianna Lewis strike snared by Rubey, one of six saves.
The Lady Owls will return to the Basin next Saturday for their lone home non-conference contest – an 8:30 a.m. match-up with Arizona Christian.
