Henley Basketball: Hornets sweep second leg of South Side Series

Henley girls and boys basketball both secured a South Side Series sweep with wins at Mazama Friday. Here’s how each game unfolded.

Girls: Henley 63, Mazama 19

Henley (18-1, 6-0 Skyline Conference) scored the game’s first 12 points en route to their first South Side Series sweep since 2019.

Trailing 21-2 entering the second quarter, Mazama (1-18, 0-6) managed to slow the Hornets’ roll a bit, but the Vikings still went into halftime down 31-6. Henley got going again out of the break, taking a 52-14 lead into the fourth quarter (which was played with a running clock, except on free throws).

Meredith Brown and Jewell Northcutt led Henley with 12 points each, followed by Annie Campos with 10 (including 6 in the third quarter), Lily Fussell with 9 (including 7 in the first quarter), Senia Campos with 6, Kennedi Modin and Prestyn Schade with 5 each, Mya Mauch with 3 and Bayli Ladner with 1. This was the third straight game with all of the Hornets’ active players scoring.

For Mazama, Shakyla Jackson had 6 points, Addi Byington had 5, Leah Hernandez had 4, and Armeda Kirkpatrick and Isabella Pena each had 2. The Vikings’ 19 points is the second fewest Henley has allowed this season.

The Henley girls travel to 3A Cascade Christian (16-6) at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Mazama girls host Klamath Union (13-2, 4-1) at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Boys: Henley 59, Mazama 48

Henley (13-7, 5-1 Skyline Conference) watched a 25-point lead get cut to 7 but held on to sweep Mazama (4-15, 1-5) for the third straight season.

The Hornets blitzed the Vikings early, going up 14-0 in the first 3:17 of the game (a run that included a 3-pointer from 6-foot-7 center Markus McCreadie) and taking a 23-5 lead into the second quarter. A 34-11 halftime lead grew to 40-15 with 5:10 left in the third quarter, but that was when Mazama began to chip away. They outscored Henley 16-8 over the rest of the period to cut it to 48-31 heading into the fourth.

The Vikings went on an 8-0 run in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter to whittle the Hornets’ lead down to 48-39. Henley stopped the bleeding over the next two minutes, getting a couple of buckets to make it 52-39. Mazama had one more run in them, drawing within 54-47 with 1:44 left in the game after a Marcos Ulloa-Ford three, but the Hornets buckled down defensively following a timeout and didn’t allow a field goal the rest of the way.

Owen Harper led Henley with 15 points (including 9 in the first quarter), 8 rebounds and 3 assists, Markus McCreadie put up 14 points, 8 rebounds, 5 blocks and 3 assists, and Aiden Hayes had 14 points, 4 assists and 2 rebounds. Other contributors for the Hornets were Luke Bennett with 9 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals; Micah Ibarra with 3 points; Lane Frank and Bryson Montag with 2 points each; and Chris Janney with a team-high 11 rebounds and 2 assists.

Henley recorded 31 defensive rebounds.

Ulloa-Ford (an Oregon Tech baseball signee) finished with a game-high 19 points (including 9 in the fourth quarter) for Mazama, followed by Kai Hunt with 16 (including 7 in the third quarter), Gabe Nanni with 10, Drake Peters with 2 and Ryan Hayden with 1.

Both teams’ next games are against Klamath Union (6-12, 1-4), with Mazama hosting the Pelicans at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Henley traveling to Pel Court at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 16.
