One long winning streak continued and another came to an end as Henley girls and boys basketball opened Skyline Conference play at Hidden Valley. Here’s how each game unfolded Tuesday.
Girls: Henley 67, Hidden Valley 33
Henley (13-0, 1-0) extended their best start since the 2014-15 season, when the Hornets won their first 22 games en route to a state championship appearance.
Hidden Valley (4-11, 0-1) trailed 15-7 after the first quarter and 30-10 with 1:45 left in the first half, but the Mustangs went on a 10-0 run to cut Henley’s lead in half heading into the break. The Hornets came back out with a vengeance, scoring 25 points in the third quarter to take a 55-31 lead and holding Hidden Valley to just two points in the fourth.
Lily Fussell led the Hornets with 17 points, 7 steals, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks. Prestyn Schade barely missed a double-double with 11 points, 9 rebounds, 6 steals and 4 assists, as did Annie Campos with 9 points, 9 steals, 6 rebounds and 2 assists. Other contributors for Henley were Kennedi Modin with 9 points and 3 steals; Anna Harper with 8 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals; Jewell Northcutt with 4 points, 4 steals, 3 rebounds and 2 assists; Bayli Ladner with 4 points; Senia Campos with 3 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals; and Mya Mauch with 2 points and 3 rebounds. The Hornets recorded a total of 36 steals.
For Hidden Valley, Riley Yunker (a Rogue Community College soccer commit) and Jasmine Kelly had 10 points each (including three second-quarter triples for Kelly), Kaylee Bennett had 6, Willow Breazeale had 4 and Aja LaPan had 3.
The Henley girls play their first home game in almost a month against Mazama (1-13, 0-1) at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Boys: Hidden Valley 54, Henley 45
An 18-2 run in the first half helped Hidden Valley (8-6, 1-0) snap Henley’s (7-6, 0-1) 18-game Skyline Conference winning streak, handing the Hornets their first league loss in three years.
The game was tied at 12 with 2:11 remaining in the first quarter, but the Mustangs outscored the Hornets 7-0 the rest of the way to take a 19-12 lead into the second. The onslaught continued until Markus McCreadie, playing in his first game since Dec. 20, converted an and-one to cut the deficit to 30-17 with 4:05 left in the half. Henley further trimmed Hidden Valley’s lead to 32-21 at halftime.
The Hornets scored the first five points of the third quarter to draw within 32-26 at 4:54. The Mustangs responded with a 10-2 run over the next 2:23 to push the lead back to 14. Henley fought back again, scoring the next six points to end the fourth quarter trailing 42-34.
The Hornets kept the run going in the first minute of the fourth, making it 42-38 on an Aiden Hayes free throw with 7:17 to go in the game. They fell back down seven, but another McCreadie and-one got them back within four at 47-43 with 4:38 remaining. After that, Henley went cold, scoring two points the rest of the game.
McCreadie wasted no time getting back to his regular form, putting up 23 points and 16 rebounds, while Hayes finished with 9 points and 2 rebounds. Other contributors for the Hornets were Luke Bennett with 7 points and 3 rebounds; Chris Janney with 4 points; Bryson Montag with 2 points and 6 rebounds; Joe Janney with 5 rebounds; and Owen Harper with 3 rebounds.
For Hidden Valley, Narin Stone had 15 points, Joshua Iwamizu had 13, Austyn Klingler had 11 (including three triples), Ivan Isley had 10, Mauricio Mendez had 3 and Presley Noga had 2. The Mustangs finished with nine made 3-pointers, including five in the first quarter.
The Henley boys play their first home game in almost a month against Mazama (2-12, 0-1) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
