Henley 33, Cascade 21

Henley (4-0) was able to buckle down and overcome a disastrous start to hand Cascade (3-1) its first loss in their final non-league game.

Hornets running back Logan Whitlock fumbled on his team’s first two drives, giving the Cougars a short field each time. Two Bryce Kuenzi touchdown runs in a span of 50 seconds gave Cascade a 14-0 lead after one quarter.

“I think I [was] looking too much to make somebody look stupid and not just working on the yards,” Whitlock said.

Henley got on the board with a 20-yard touchdown run from quarterback Joe Janney–his first rushing touchdown of the season–with 9:15 remaining in the second quarter. Whitlock scored his first touchdown with 2:23 left in the half to make it a one-point game, but a missed PAT and a goal-line interception by Cascade’s Morrisen Craig meant the Hornets headed to the locker room trailing 14-13.

The teams spent much of the second quarter trading turnovers. By halftime, Cascade had forced four turnovers (two interceptions and two fumbles) and Henley had forced three (one interception and two fumbles).

The game turned in Henley’s favor late in the third quarter. Whitlock scored his second touchdown on a 5-yard run with 3:57 to go to put Henley up 19-14. On the first play of Cascade’s ensuing drive, the Hornets recovered a fumble at the 20-yard line. Whitlock immediately scored his third touchdown of the night–17 seconds of game time after his second–to give his team a 26-14 lead.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Cascade quarterback Nolan Abrams ran in a 12-yard touchdown run to cut Henley’s lead to 26-21. It looked like the Cougars would retake the lead after getting the ball at the Henley 41-yard line on their next drive thanks to a shanked punt, but the Hornets forced a turnover on downs. A successful punt to cap off the ensuing drive went for a touchback, giving Cascade the ball at their own 20 with 5:42 remaining in the game.

On third-and-11, Chris Janney intercepted an Abrams pass for Henley’s fifth forced turnover of the night. It allowed the Hornets to milk the clock until Whitlock scored his fourth touchdown of the game with 1:08 left.

Whitlock said having to band together and overcome adversity after blowing out their first three opponents was good for Henley.

“This game was huge,” Whitlock said. “It really sets the bar for what to expect later on in the season.”

Henley returns to league play as they host Hidden Valley (1-3) at 7 p.m. next Friday.

Mazama 67, North Bend 21

Mazama (3-1, 1-0) responded to their first regular season loss in two years by scoring their most points in two years.

North Bend (3-1, 1-1) led 14-8 after the first quarter, but Mazama scored the next 59 points. The Vikings amassed 538 yards of offense, averaging just under 13 yards per play.

“Just feels good to finally be playing at a high level,” Mazama head coach Vic Lease said. “But we still have work to do.”

Kristopher Baldwin led Mazama’s vaunted ground game–which was responsible for all but 20 yards of the Vikings’ offensive output–with 214 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries. Quarterback Tyson Van Gastel put up 177 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries, including a 78-yard score on Mazama’s first play of the game.

The Vikings travel to Ashland (3-1, 1-1) at 7 p.m. next Friday.

Lost River 20, Heppner 6

On paper, it would seem that Heppner (3-1) had nearly every possible advantage in this game; the Mustangs were playing at home under the nine-player rules familiar to them as a 2A team.

None of that was a hindrance to Lost River (4-0), which shut down a Heppner offense that averaged more than 40 points over its first three games. The Mustangs scored their only points of the game on their opening drive.

A touchdown run from Connor Dunlea and an interception from Beau Sanders helped the Raiders secure the win in the fourth quarter.

Lost River resumes league play with a trip to Myrtle Point (3-0) at 7 p.m. next Friday.

Marshfield 42, Klamath Union 20

Big plays and penalties proved to be Klamath Union’s (1-3, 0-2) undoing as Marshfield (1-3, 1-1) quarterback Enoch Niblett threw six touchdown passes–including four of at least 30 yards. The Pelicans were only outgained 290-279 but were penalized 14 times for 133 yards. The Pirates were flagged five times for 40 yards.

Klamath Union trailed 8-6 after a 2-yard touchdown run by quarterback Lamar Cuellar on the first play of the second quarter, but Marshfield scored three touchdowns in the final five minutes of the half to take a 30-6 lead into the locker room. The Pelicans didn’t find the end zone again until running back Levi Hicks scored on a 21-yard run with 6:22 left in the game and the Pirates leading 42-6. Cuellar hit Gavin Coe for a 36-yard touchdown with 1:57 to go for the final points of the night.

Cuellar completed 13-of-28 passes for 174 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Hicks finished with 45 yards and a touchdown on seven carries, and Jett Johnson added 44 yards on five carries. Jamar Cuellar led the Pelicans defense with 12 tackles, including three for a loss.

Klamath Union plays their first home game since Sept. 9 against North Bend (3-1, 1-1) at 7 p.m. next Friday.

Lakeview 33, St. Mary’s Medford 0

Lakeview (4-0) got their second shutout of the season to remain undefeated and tied for first place in Special District 3. It’s the second time in the past three seasons the Honkers have started 4-0.

Lakeview plays the second of their four-game road stretch at North Valley (3-1) at 7 p.m. next Friday.

Tulelake (CA) 26, Burney (CA) 8

Tulelake (5-0) is off to its best start since it won its first six games in 2019.

The Honkers have a bye next week and host Chester (CA) on Oct. 6.

Myrtle Point 74, Chiloquin 6 (Saturday)

Chiloquin (0-4, 0-2) has a bye next week before a non-league game at Perrydale at 5 p.m. Oct. 6.

Bonanza 30, Camas Valley 28 (Saturday)
