High school softball: Henley’s Skyline Conference winning streak ends, other results from Friday, Saturday

All six Basin high school softball teams were in action Friday and Saturday. Here’s everything you may have missed.

Friday

2A/1A No. 9 Lost River 21, Bonanza 0 (3 innings) (Game 1)

2A/1A No. 9 Lost River 17, Bonanza 0 (3 innings) (Game 2)

Lost River (8-3, 4-1 2A/1A Special District 6) senior Mckenzie Dalton allowed zero hits and recorded seven strikeouts in both games as the visiting Raiders completed a season sweep of Bonanza (0-7, 0-6). 

Junior Karla Navarro racked up 7 RBI across both contests, and senior Avery Turner had six.

Lost River travels to 3A Lakeview (3-4) at 4 p.m. Monday. Bonanza hosts Chiloquin (2-0, 0-0) at 4 p.m. Tuesday. 

Chiloquin 11, Lakeview JV 7

Visiting Chiloquin (2-0) beat the Lakeview JV team for the second time in three days.

The Queens travel to Bonanza (0-7, 0-6) to open 2A/1A Special District 6 play at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

4A No. 5 Phoenix 10, Mazama 3

Host Phoenix (6-1, 3-0 Skyline Conference) trailed 3-1 after the first inning but scored eight runs across the third and fourth innings to avoid an upset. 

Mazama (4-4, 1-3) junior Armeda Kirkpatrick’s three-run home run turned out to be the only scoring for the Vikings, who finished with three hits. Phoenix junior Destiny Christlieb hit a three-run bomb of her own to give the Pirates a 4-3 lead in the third inning and added a solo homer in the sixth. She finished 3-for-4 with 7 RBI. 

Mazama allowed six unearned runs and committed six errors. 

Phoenix freshman Rylei Rivero pitched 5.1 innings and allowed 3 earned runs on 2 hits with 7 strikeouts and 4 walks.

Mazama travels to 3A No. 9 North Valley (7-6) for a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. Phoenix travels to Henley (7-3, 2-1) at 5 p.m. Wednesday. 

4A No. 6 Hidden Valley/New Hope Christian 12, Henley 2 (5 innings)

Hidden Valley/New Hope Christian (10-2, 2-1) scored five unearned runs in the fifth inning to get a run-rule win at Henley (7-3, 2-1). 

It’s the first time the Mustangs have beaten the Hornets since 2013 and the first time the Hornets have lost a Skyline Conference game since 2022. Henley had won its last 30 league matchups. 

Hidden Valley/New Hope Christian senior Scarlett Gordon–an Iowa Central Community College commit–allowed 2 earned runs on 4 hits with 8 strikeouts and 1 walk in 5 innings while going 3-for-4 with 4 RBI at the plate. Senior Bailey Sandquist, an Eastern Oregon signee, hit a solo home run to cap off a four-run third inning for the Mustangs. Five consecutive batters drove in runs for Hidden Valley/New Hope Christian following a one-out error in the fifth. 

Freshman Cozette Venegas (RBI double) and junior Gracie White (RBI single) drove in both Henley runs in the third inning. The Hornets allowed 13 hits. 

Both teams play at 5 p.m. Wednesday; Henley hosts 4A No. 5 Phoenix (6-1, 3-0), while Hidden Valley/New Hope Christian hosts Klamath Union/Crosspoint Christian (3-5, 0-3).

Saturday

3A No. 9 North Valley 9, Klamath Union/Crosspoint Christian 3 (Game 1)

3A No. 9 North Valley 12, Klamath Union/Crosspoint Christian 5 (Game 2)

Visiting Klamath Union/Crosspoint Christian (3-5) outhit North Valley (7-6) but fell victim to defensive miscues in both games.

In Game 1, back-to-back errors in the first inning helped the Knights build a 5-0 lead. The Pelicans scored all three of their runs in the sixth inning on doubles by sophomore Alex Pinacho and freshman Ella Hammond and a single by freshman Jocelyn Rice. Klamath Union/Crosspoint Christian had 10 hits to North Valley’s nine, and five of the Knights’ runs were unearned.

In Game 2, the Pelicans scored four runs in the fifth inning to draw within 5-4, but North Valley answered with seven runs in the bottom half of the frame to push the score to 12-4. Junior Dahlia Bunnell had 2 RBI, and Hammond, junior Braidyn Wright and freshman Paytn Westlake each had 1. Klamath Union/Crosspoint Christian had 10 hits to North Valley’s eight, and six of the Knights’ runs were unearned; the Pelicans committed three errors.

Westlake pitched all 6 innings for Klamath Union/Crosspoint Christian in Game 2, striking out a career-high 13 batters while issuing 5 walks. 

Klamath Union/Crosspoint Christian resumes Skyline Conference play at 4A No. 6 Hidden Valley/New Hope Christian (10-2, 2-1) at 5 p.m. Wednesday. North Valley hosts Mazama (4-4) for a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
