Saturday
Henley 7, The Dalles/Dufur 6 (Game 1)
Henley 5, The Dalles/Dufur 4 (Game 2)
Clutch hitting lifted Henley (6-2) to a pair of wins over The Dalles/Dufur (1-4) at Summit High School.
It was the first meeting between the two programs since the 2023 4A championship game, which the Riverhawks won 16-0.
In Game 1, the Hornets took a 4-1 lead after the first inning, scoring one run each on an error and a bases-loaded hit by pitch and two runs on a passed ball. With Henley up 6-4 entering the seventh inning, The Dalles/Dufur senior Maddie Brock led off the top of the frame with a double, allowing sophomore Cadence Young to tie the game with a two-run home run on the next at-bat. The Hornets retired the next three hitters.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Henley junior Belle Birch came to the plate with two outs and runners on first and second. However, the runners were able to advance to second and third on a wild pitch. On the next pitch, Birch hit a ground ball to the circle, and freshman Makayla Schroeder beat the throw home to score the game-ending run.
Birch ended up with 3 RBI despite going 0-for-3 at the plate; prior to the walk-off, which was scored as a fielder’s choice, she was the recipient of the bases-loaded HBP in the first inning and recorded an RBI groundout in the fifth. No other Hornets players were credited with an RBI, as their other four runs were unearned.
In Game 2, Henley fell behind 4-0 after three innings, with The Dalles/Dufur scoring two runs on Hornets errors. Henley plated four runs in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game, scoring on a bases-loaded hit by pitch and an error before junior Jillian Vickery hit a two-run double with two outs.
With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, junior Layli Segura sent the first pitch she saw over the center field fence for her second home run of the season. In the bottom half of the inning, freshman Rylee Hollingsworth set the Riverhawks down in order, earning her first complete-game win.
Henley resumes Skyline Conference play at Mazama (3-2, 1-1) at 5 p.m. Tuesday. The Dalles/Dufur travels to defending 4A champion Pendleton (8-0) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
