High school basketball: Crosspoint Christian boys escape upset in 1A playoffs, other results from Tuesday, Wednesday

The regular season came to an end in 4A basketball earlier this week while the OSAA playoffs began in 1A. Here’s how things played out for Basin teams.

Tuesday

Henley 68, Hidden Valley 26 (Girls)

On senior night, Henley (22-2, 12-0) completed its first undefeated Skyline Conference campaign in 10 years as Hidden Valley’s (8-16, 4-8) season came to a close.

The Hornets led 23-6 after the first quarter, 41-13 at halftime and 55-17 after the third quarter. 

Freshman Makayla Schroeder had a career-high 28 points and 15 rebounds (her 17th double-double of the season); senior Anna Harper had 8 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocks; junior Lily Fussell had 7 points, 9 steals and 4 rebounds; junior Senia Campos had 4 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists; freshman Jayci Ladner had 3 points and 5 rebounds; senior Bayli Ladner had 3 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists; juniors Kennedi Modin, Brooklyn Conrad and Spur Barney-Smith had 3 points; sophomore Prestyn Schade had 2 points and 5 assists; junior Kaydence Nelson had 2 points and 2 rebounds; freshman Gretchen Cheyne had 2 points; and freshman Saige White had 2 assists. 

For the Mustangs, junior Sam Lesher had 15 points (8 in the fourth quarter), sophomore Kaylee Bennett had 3, seniors Hannah Rommes and Marlo Pearce and junior Makayla Dean all had 2, and sophomore Naomi Blanton and freshman Grace Peterson both had 1. 

Hidden Valley graduates three seniors from this year’s team: Rommes, Pearce, and Bailey Sandquist. 

The Hornets received the No. 3 seed in the 4A playoffs and will host a first-round game March 7 against an opponent TBD.

Phoenix 64, Mazama 23 (Girls)

Phoenix (14-9, 7-5) took second place in the Skyline Conference with a senior night win over Mazama (1-22, 0-12). 

Sophomore Leah Hernandez led the Vikings with 12 points. Mazama graduates four seniors from this year’s team: Addie Byington, London O’Brien, Mada Lee and Caelyn Davis.

Phoenix received an automatic bid to the 4A playoffs, but its seeding won’t be determined until after the play-in round. The Pirates will travel for their first-round game March 7. 

Echo 64, Crosspoint Christian 15 (Girls)

No. 24 seed Crosspoint Christian (16-11) lost in its first-ever playoff game as No. 9 seed Echo (21-6) won its playoff opener for the fourth year in a row.

The Cougars led 15-3 after the first quarter, 37-8 at halftime and 54-15 after the third quarter.

Freshman Olivia Fenner led the Warriors with 4 points, junior Charlotte Spalding had 3, sophomore Chloe Butler had 2 and junior Keira Mahan had 1. 

For Echo, junior Cam Estes had 11 points, senior Ella Stahl and freshman Lilah Miller both had 9, junior Kenzie Hendrix and freshman Elsie Bowman both had 8, sophomore Jaycee Campbell had 7, sophomore Taylor Sperr had 6, sophomore Jude Royer had 4 and junior Julietta Romero-Muñoz had 2.

In addition to its first playoff appearance, Crosspoint Christian’s lone senior–Jade Cummings–departs after helping the Warriors to the most wins in program history (the school opened in 2020). Crosspoint Christian finished 8-17 last season. 

Echo travels to No. 8 seed Trout Lake/Glenwood (19-4) in the second round of the 1A playoffs at 6 p.m. Friday. 

Trout Lake/Glenwood 64, Chiloquin 42 (Girls)

No. 25 seed Chiloquin (12-10) lost its first-round game at No. 8 seed Trout Lake/Glenwood (19-4) as the Mustangs advanced to the second round for the fourth straight season.

Trout Lake/Glenwood led 20-11 after the first quarter, 40-23 at halftime and 55-28 after the third quarter.

Junior Makayla Jayne led the Queens with 15 points, senior Ladyhawk Wright had 9, junior Dejah Head had 6, senior To-le-us Ochoa had 4, senior Laila Weiser had 3, senior Weeyaya Brown and junior Tahya Brown both had 2, and junior Mabel Avina-Parazoo had 1. 

For the Mustangs, senior Violette Anderson had 34 points, junior Emma Patterson had 10, senior Kinsley Lanz had 6, senior Jayla Avila and sophomore Cora Sharp both had 5, and freshman Payton Leis had 4.

Chiloquin’s seniors–Wright, Ochoa, Weiser, Weeyaya Brown, Elaine Gilcrist and Alivia Miller–amassed a four-year record of 50-30 and made the 1A playoffs three times. They also helped the Queens to a Mountain Valley League championship game appearance in 2024.

Trout Lake/Glenwood hosts No. 9 seed Echo (21-6) in the second round of the 1A playoffs at 6 p.m. Friday. 

Hidden Valley 56, Henley 47 (Boys)

Hidden Valley (15-9, 7-5 Skyline Conference) never trailed as it handed Henley (4-18, 0-12) a senior night loss.

The Mustangs led 10-4 after the first quarter, 31-19 at halftime and 45-35 after the third quarter. The Hornets cut the deficit to 48-42 with 6:03 to go on a pair of free throws from senior Bryson Montag but weren’t able to get any closer. 

Montag finished with 12 points (including two threes), 10 rebounds and 2 assists; sophomore Carson Siems had 9 points; senior Nolan Mick had 8 points and 3 rebounds; sophomore Corbin Hamilton had 8 points and 2 rebounds; sophomore Micah Ibarra had 6 points (on two threes), 2 rebounds and 2 steals; senior Finn Charlton had 4 points and 2 rebounds; junior Ries Schmerbach had 3 rebounds; and junior Jeremiah Brunick had 2 rebounds. 

For Hidden Valley, senior Joshua Iwamizu had 20 points, senior Keizer Daily had 11 (including three triples), senior Austyn Klingler had 9, senior Narin Stone had 8, senior Braxton Brierty had 5, sophomore Cooper Gagnon had 2 and senior Tommy Drake had 1. 

Henley graduates four seniors from this year’s team: Montag, Mick, Charlton, and Kim Sabayton. 

Hidden Valley travels to Stayton (13-10) in a 4A play-in game at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. 

Phoenix 68, Mazama 59 (Boys)

Host Phoenix (16-7, 10-2) came out on top in a winner-take-all game to claim the Skyline Conference championship, denying Mazama (13-11, 9-3) its first league title since 2018. 

It’s the Pirates’ first Skyline Conference championship since 2004. 

Senior Kai Hunt led the Vikings with 18 points (including two threes), 8 assists, 5 rebounds and 2 steals; senior Dominic Melgoza had 14 points (including two threes) and 5 rebounds; senior Gabe Nanni had 10 points (including two threes), 11 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocks; senior Jordan Beals had 8 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals; junior Michael Piscitello had 7 points and 5 rebounds; and senior Ryan Hayden had 2 points and 9 rebounds.

Mazama shot 23-of-67 (34%) from the field, including 6-of-20 from 3-point range, and made 7-of-9 free throws (78%). 

The Vikings earned an automatic bid to the 4A playoffs, but their seeding won’t be determined until after the play-in round. They’ll travel for their first-round game March 8.

Wednesday

Dufur 56, Chiloquin 51 (Boys)

No. 25 seed Chiloquin (14-11) put together a strong upset bid but couldn’t hold on as No. 8 seed Dufur (21-6) rallied for the win.

The Panthers led 15-12 after the first quarter and 30-26 at halftime before the Rangers tied the game at 43-43 after the third quarter.

Freshman Denver Bravo led Chiloquin with 14 points (8 in the fourth quarter, including two threes), sophomore Edward Jones had 12 (6 in the second quarter), senior Marques Hescock and sophomore Dilen Black both had 9, and sophomore Lalan Wilder had 7. 

For Dufur, senior Jacob Kent had 18 points, senior Jacob Brown had 12 (including two threes), senior Nolan Cates had 10 (including two threes), sophomore Jake Fargher had 7, senior Klayton Schanno had 5, and senior Foster Harvey and freshman Bryson Cates both had 2. 

Hescock, the Panthers’ lone senior, departs after helping Chiloquin to its most wins since the 2017-18 season and first 1A playoff appearance since the 2016-17 season. 

Dufur hosts No. 9 seed Union (21-6) in the second round of the 1A playoffs at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Crosspoint Christian 62, Condon 60 (Boys)

No. 7 seed Crosspoint Christian narrowly avoided a late collapse as No. 26 seed Condon (14-11) missed a half-court shot at the buzzer. 

The Warriors led 17-9 after the first quarter, 29-20 at halftime and 44-33 after the third quarter. Trailing by 10 with about two minutes remaining, the Blue Devils began knocking down 3-pointers as Crosspoint Christian struggled at the free-throw line. 

The Warriors turned the ball over leading 62-57 with 10 seconds to go, allowing Condon to make it a two-point game with another three. The last-gasp shot came after Crosspoint Christian missed two free throws with 5.6 seconds on the clock. 

The Warriors made 7-of-26 free throws (27%). They shot 26-of-65 (40%) from the field, including 3-of-14 (21%) from 3-point range.

Sophomore Caden Moritz led Crosspoint Christian with 18 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals; junior Brock Throne had 17 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks; junior Davis Hartwell had 13 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals; senior Kody Sparks had 6 points (on two threes), 3 assists and 2 rebounds; junior Clayton Turnage had 4 points and 6 rebounds; junior Collin Kleinjan had 2 points and 5 rebounds; and sophomore Trey Johnston had 2 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists. 

For Condon, senior Blake Carnine had 18 points (9 in the fourth quarter), senior Jackson Helms had 12, senior Wyatt Johnson and freshman Camren Barnett both had 10 (Johnson made two threes; Barnett scored 7 points in the fourth quarter), senior Brodie Bass had 4, and senior Jayden Havins and sophomore Jacoby Roberts both had 3. 

The Blue Devils’ senior class–Carnine, Helms, Johnson, Bass, Havins, Jonathan Bates and Carson Greenwood–departs after helping Condon to three 1A playoff appearances with a four-year record of 50-42. 

This is the first time Crosspoint Christian has advanced to the second round of the 1A playoffs, excluding the 1A tournament held at the end of the delayed and shortened 2020-21 season. Triad, which merged with Hosanna Christian in 2020 to form Crosspoint Christian, won the 1A championship in its final season. 

The Warriors host No. 7 seed Days Creek (19-7) at 3 p.m. Saturday.
