High school basketball: Henley girls win, boys lose in doubleheader with Phoenix

The Henley girls and boys were the only Basin teams in action Monday; both squads hosted Phoenix in their penultimate regular season games. Here’s how each matchup unfolded.

4A No. 3 Henley 75, Phoenix 43 (Girls)

Henley (21-2, 11-0 Skyline Conference) senior Anna Harper scored her 1,000th career point as the host Hornets completed a season sweep of Phoenix (13-9, 6-5). 

Henley led 28-13 after the first quarter, 49-18 at halftime and 65-28 after the third quarter. The fourth quarter was played with a running clock (except on free throws). 

Harper entered the game needing 16 points to reach the millennium mark. She scored that many in the first half, hitting the milestone on a layup with 3:11 left in the second quarter. 

Harper finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season; junior Lily Fussell had 13 points, 6 steals, 5 rebounds and 2 assists; junior Senia Campos had 11 points (including three triples), 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals; sophomore Prestyn Schade had 7 points and 4 assists; junior Kennedi Modin had 6 points and 2 assists; freshmen Saige White and Jayci Ladner both had 5 points and 2 rebounds; senior Bayli Ladner had 4 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals; freshman Makayla Schroeder had 2 points and 11 rebounds; freshman Gretchen Cheyne had 2 points and 3 rebounds; and junior Kaydence Nelson had 2 points and 2 rebounds. 

For the Pirates, senior Alissa Alvarez had 18 points (10 in the fourth quarter), sophomore Lilly Quintero had 13 (including two threes), senior Mae Woodward had 6, sophomore Carsyn Sousa had 5 and freshman Zepherya Noxon had 1. 

Both teams conclude the regular season at 6 p.m. Tuesday; Henley hosts Hidden Valley (8-15, 4-7), while Phoenix hosts Mazama (1-21, 0-11).  

Phoenix 53, Henley 32 (Boys)

Visiting Phoenix (15-7, 9-2 Skyline Conference) completed a season sweep of Henley (4-17, 0-11) and gave itself a chance to win its first league title since 2004. 

The Pirates led 16-11 after the first quarter, 22-15 at halftime and 37-24 after the third quarter. 

Sophomore Micah Ibarra led the Hornets with 14 points (including three triples) and 2 rebounds; sophomore Corbin Hamilton had 8 points and 2 assists; senior Nolan Mick had 5 points and 2 rebounds; sophomore Carson Siems had 3 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals; senior Bryson Montag had 2 points and 7 rebounds; junior Jeremiah Brunick had 7 rebounds; and junior Ries Schmerbach had 2 rebounds.

For Phoenix, senior Tobias Akpan had 17 points (11 in the first quarter), senior Martin Ortega had 14, senior Brayden Decker had 10 (including two threes), senior Lucas Wihtol had 4, senior Aren Roman and junior Ethan Dobbins both had 3, and senior Sidney McQueen had 2. 

Both teams play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday; Henley hosts Hidden Valley (14-9, 6-5) to conclude its season, while Phoenix hosts Mazama (13-10, 9-2) in a winner-take-all game to decide the Skyline Conference champion.
