This week was league tournament week in the OSAA 2A and 1A classifications, with playoff bids on the line for several Basin teams. Take a look at how things played out (plus some other games you may have missed) and learn where playoff-bound squads landed on the bracket.
Wednesday
Crosspoint Christian 35, Central Christian 32 (Girls)
No. 4 seed Crosspoint Christian beat No. 5 seed Central Christian for the third time this season to advance to the Mountain Valley League third place game.
The host Warriors led 9-4 after the first quarter, 14-8 at halftime and 23-20 after the third quarter.
Junior Hannah Langford led Crosspoint Christian with 10 points, freshman Olivia Fenner had 8, sophomore Norah Radford had 7, junior Charlotte Spalding and sophomore Chloe Butler both had 4, and senior Jade Cummings and junior Keria Mahan both had 1.
For the Tigers, sophomore Joslynn Terry had 15 points, junior Tabitha Terry had 10 and sophomore Alexa Epley had 7.
North Lake/Paisley Charter 36, Chiloquin 33 (Girls)
A day after losing at Chiloquin to wrap up the regular season, No. 2 seed North Lake/Paisley Charter beat the No. 3 seed Queens at home to advance to the Mountain Valley League championship game.
The loss sent Chiloquin to the third place game. The Queens led 8-6 after the first quarter and 14-12 at halftime but fell behind 27-22 entering the fourth quarter.
Junior Makayla Jayne led Chiloquin with 12 points, junior Dejah Head had 10, senior Laila Perez had 6, senior To-le-us Ochoa had 3 and senior Weeyaya Brown had 2.
For North Lake/Paisley Charter, sophomore Emma Baker had 11 points, sophomore Dillynn Puckett had 8, sophomore Acacia Roth had 6, senior Grace Brummer and freshman Taylor Uran both had 3, junior Lindsay McAulay and freshman Viktoria Baker both had 2, and freshman Sally Rudolf had 1.
Etna 58, Tulelake 51 (Girls)
No. 8 seed Tulelake (14-12) bowed out in the first round of the CIF Northern Section Division VI playoffs as No. 9 seed Etna (8-20) advanced to the quarterfinals.
It’s the fifth season in a row the Honkers have bowed out in the opening round of the playoffs. Tulelake last won a postseason game in 2019.
Senior Makenzie Perez led the Honkers with 16 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds and 2 steals; junior Josefina Mojica had 14 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds; junior Alejandra Perez had 8 points, 8 blocks and 6 rebounds; junior Na’Tali Idrogo had 5 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists; senior Maritza Chavolla had 4 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists; sophomore Quetzali Chavez had 2 points and 4 rebounds; senior Lizbeydi Garcia had 2 points and 2 rebounds; and senior Madison Fine had 1 assist.
Thursday
Bonanza 34, Lost River 28 (Girls)
No. 3 seed Bonanza did not make a field goal until junior Maggie Ackley converted a baseline layup in the final minute of the third quarter, but the Antlers outscored No. 2 seed Lost River 24-9 in the fourth to advance to the East Cascades Conference championship game.
The loss ended the Raiders’ season, as they were the third team to miss the cut for an at-large bid to the 2A playoffs. They led 7-1 after the first quarter, 15-4 at halftime and 19-10 after the third quarter.
Ackley outscored Lost River by herself in the final period, putting up 11 points–including back-to-back buckets in the final minute to help seal the game for the Antlers.
An 8-0 run gave Bonanza its first lead at 24-23 with four minutes remaining. Senior Zuli Cobian put the Raiders back in front with a 3-pointer, but Ackley buried a shot from just inside the arc to tie the game at 26-26 on the next possession.
Two made free throws by senior Gemma Arceo-Bigoni gave Lost River the lead again with 3:12 remaining, but Bonanza held the Raiders scoreless the rest of the way. Senior Vashti Arata made a go-ahead layup with one minute left before Ackley closed things out.
Ackley finished with 16 points, Arata and senior Grace Kness both had 5, seniors Mary Schooler and Haley Wierleske both had 3, and junior Briza Garcia had 2.
For Lost River, Cobian and freshman Isabelle Herring both had 6 points, senior Mckenzie Dalton had 5, Arceo-Bigoni had 4, senior Avery Turner, junior Macey Thomson and sophomore Amaris Hernandez all had 2, and junior Eily Hawkins had 1.
Lost River’s senior class–Turner, Cobian, Arceo-Bigoni, Dalton, Mari Lou Estrada and Julia Ayala–departs after guiding the Raiders to a 14-7 record, their best since the 2019-20 campaign (19-6). Lost River went 18-49 in the three seasons prior to this one.
Rogue Valley Adventist Academy 74, Chiloquin 43 (Boys)
No. 2 seed Rogue Valley Adventist Academy beat No. 3 seed Chiloquin for the third time this season, advancing to the Mountain Valley League championship game and sending the Panthers to the third place game.
The Red Tail Hawks led 23-14 after the first quarter, 45-28 at halftime and 63-36 after the third quarter.
Freshman Denver Bravo led Chiloquin with 13 points, sophomore Edward Jones had 9, senior Marques Hescock had 7, sophomore Dilen Black had 5, freshman Dade Mitchell had 4, sophomore Lalan Wilder had 3 and junior Danny Black had 2.
For Rogue Valley Adventist Academy, sophomore Dawson Glasgow had 25 points, senior Braiden Perry had 17, senior Jonah Downs had 14, junior Noah Lauesi had 10, senior Kekoa Cavagnol had 4, and sophomores Enoch Perry and Micah Downs both had 2.
Bonanza 56, Lost River 51 (Boys)
Bonanza junior Garrett Gallagher dribbled the length of the floor for an and-one to put the No. 2 seed Antlers up 55-51 with 41 seconds left in the East Cascades Conference semifinal, and No. 3 seed Lost River missed two threes on the ensuing possession.
It was the Raiders’ third loss to Bonanza this season and one that kept them out of the 2A playoffs. Lost River, which finished ranked No. 15 in the OSAA 2A computer rankings, was the first team to miss the cut for an at-large bid; the last one went to No. 14 Santiam.
The Antlers scored 10 straight points to jump out to a 10-3 lead with 5:46 to go in the first quarter, but the Raiders reclaimed the lead with 1:50 remaining when junior Connor Guthrie hit a three to cap off an 8-0 run. Bonanza scored the last four points of the period to take a 14-11 lead into the second quarter, which featured three lead changes and two ties and ended with Lost River leading 28-26.
The teams went bucket-for-bucket in the first half of the third quarter, which had six lead changes and one tie. Things slowed down after senior Tate Freeman hit a layup to give the Raiders a 37-34 lead with 3:03 on the clock; the next field goal for either side came when senior Noah O’Neill had a blocked 3-pointer land directly in his arms, then turned and scored an and-one with one second left.
Trailing 40-36 to start the fourth quarter, the Antlers broke off an 11-1 run to go up 47-41 with 5:49 remaining. Lost River drew within one point twice (with the second time coming immediately before Gallagher’s full-court drive) but never tied or regained the lead. Bonanza senior Victor Gonzalez made a free throw with eight seconds left to reach the final score.
Senior Tristan McGann led the Antlers with 21 points (including six threes), Gallagher and sophomore Dominick Lamboy both had 9, senior Alex Renzetti had 8, Gonzalez had 6 and sophomore Colby Medeiros had 3.
For Lost River, Freeman and senior Beau Sanders both had 10 points, senior Kayden Hartman had 9 (on three triples), O’Neill had 8, Guthrie had 6, and senior Doug Jenkins and junior Charles Overcash both had 4.
The Raiders’ senior class–Freeman, Sanders, Hartman, O’Neill, Jenkins and Rex Bodle–amassed a four-year record of 76-25, the most wins since the class of 1999. Last season, Lost River took fourth place at the 1A state championships (its best finish since 1999) and set a new program record with 25 wins.
Friday
Hidden Valley 37, Mazama 22 (Girls)
On senior night, Hidden Valley (8-15, 4-7 Skyline Conference) snapped a four-game losing streak and handed Mazama (1-21, 0-11) its sixth straight loss.
Both teams play at 6 p.m. Tuesday; Mazama travels to Phoenix (13-8, 6-4), while Hidden Valley travels to 4A No. 3 Henley (20-2, 10-0).
Klamath Union 61, Phoenix 42 (Girls)
In its regular season finale, Klamath Union (12-12, 7-5 Skyline Conference) scored its most points of the campaign and denied Phoenix (13-8, 6-4) a season sweep.
Sophomore Lisette Watah led the host Pelicans with 21 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists; senior Andi Harmon had 15 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals; junior Bella Armijo had 8 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals; senior Jazmin Wilson had 6 points, 5 assists, 4 steals and 3 rebounds; junior Ariah Miller had 4 points; junior Winnie Hsieh had 3 points and 2 steals; senior Farrah Zumwalt had 2 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals; and junior Anyssa Jimenez had 2 points and 3 steals.
Klamath Union shot 27-of-59 (46%) from the field, including 3-of-11 (27%) from 3-point range, and made 4-of-8 free throws.
Having secured a postseason berth, Klamath Union will now await the 4A draw. Phoenix has two regular season games left: on the road against 4A No. 3 Henley (20-2, 10-0) at 6 p.m. Monday and at home against Mazama (1-21, 0-11) at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Mazama 55, Hidden Valley 43 (Boys)
Visiting Mazama (13-10, 9-2) won the season series with Hidden Valley (14-9, 6-5) and gave itself a chance to capture the Skyline Conference title outright.
Senior Gabe Nanni led the Vikings with 25 points (including five threes), 7 rebounds and 3 steals; senior Dominic Melgoza had 10 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals; senior Ryan Hayden (a College of Idaho football commit) had 9 points and 11 rebounds; senior Kai Hunt had 4 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds; senior Jordan Beals had 4 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds; senior Drake Peters had 2 points and 2 rebounds; and junior Michael Piscitello had 1 point, 6 rebounds and 2 steals.
Mazama shot 18-of-55 (33%) from the field, including 5-of-13 (38%) from 3-point range, and made 14-of-21 free throws.
Both teams play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday; Mazama travels to Phoenix (14-7, 8-2) for a possible winner-take-all game to decide the Skyline Conference champion, while Hidden Valley travels to Henley (4-16, 0-10) for its regular season finale.
Phoenix 76, Klamath Union 57 (Boys)
Klamath Union (8-16, 4-8 Skyline Conference) ended its season with a home loss to Phoenix (14-7, 8-2).
Senior Grafton Watah led the Pelicans with 30 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists; senior Roland Vannarath had 10 points and 5 steals; junior Landon Bogatay had 9 points and 2 assists; senior Bryce Petersen had 5 points, 2 assists and 2 steals; senior Malcolm Lassett-Hankins had 3 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals; and senior Ryan Glidden had 2 rebounds.
Klamath Union shot 21-of-43 (49%) from the field, including 7-of-18 (39%) from 3-point range, and made 8-of-12 free throws.
In addition to Watah, Vannarath, Petersen, Lassett-Hankins and Glidden, the Pelicans graduate Isaac Rodriguez-Galan, Dashal Geraud and Diego Hutchinson from this year’s team.
Phoenix travels to Henley (4-16, 0-10) at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
Saturday
Bonanza 54, Trinity Lutheran 45 (Girls)
No. 3 seed Bonanza (15-11) pulled ahead 28-27 on a layup by senior Vashti Arata with 2:54 left in the third quarter and never trailed again en route to winning the inaugural East Cascades Conference championship game.
Although Trinity Lutheran (13-10) was the No. 1 seed, Bonanza was selected to host the championship game prior to the season. The Antlers beat the Saints 55-44 at home on Jan. 17 before losing 44-40 at Trinity Lutheran on Feb. 17.
Bonanza trailed 11-5 after the first quarter, with junior Briza Garcia laying in the Antlers’ first points at the 2:37 mark. A 10-2 run in the opening 2:12 of the second quarter gave Bonanza its first lead of the game at 15-13, and the teams entered halftime tied 22-22. The Antlers led 35-32 after the third quarter, and it was a multiple-possession game the rest of the way after senior Mary Schooler scored the first basket of the fourth.
Schooler led Bonanza with 14 points, senior Grace Kness had 11, Garcia had 10, Arata had 9, junior Maggie Ackley had 8 and senior Haley Wierleske had 2.
For the Saints, juniors Brooke Hueners and Ella Prelog both had 9 points, senior Mereyah Smith had 7, senior Aubree Weisner had 6 (on two threes), freshmen Alea McAllister, Abbie McFadyen and Alivia Bryan all had 4, and sophomore Keira Smith had 2.
Bonanza received the No. 14 seed in the 2A playoffs and will travel to No. 3 seed Western Christian (22-3) Friday at a time TBD. It’s the fifth consecutive playoff appearance for the Antlers, including the unofficial 2A playoffs held during the delayed and shortened 2020-21 season.
Trinity Lutheran received the No. 16 seed in the 2A playoffs and will travel to No. 1 seed Stanfield (20-5) Friday at a time TBD. It’s the Saints’ fourth playoff appearance in five seasons, including the unofficial 1A playoffs held during the delayed and shortened 2020-21 season.
Chiloquin 59, Crosspoint Christian 53 (Girls)
No. 3 seed Chiloquin (12-9) beat No. 4 seed Crosspoint Christian (16-10) in the Mountain Valley League third place game to secure the conference’s final automatic bid to the 1A playoffs.
The game was played at Central Christian. The Queens led 12-10 after the first quarter, 27-17 at halftime and 39-31 after the third quarter.
Junior Dejah Head led Chiloquin with 24 points, junior Makayla Jayne had 15, senior Ladyhawk Wright had 12, senior Laila Perez had 5, senior To-le-us Ochoa had 2 and junior Mabel Avina-Parazoo had 1.
For the Warriors, sophomore Norah Radford had 15 points (including four threes), junior Hannah Langford had 9, junior Kim Pannell had 8 (including two threes), junior Charlotte Spalding had 7 (including two threes), sophomore Chloe Butler had 6, freshman Olivia Fenner had 5, junior Keira Mahan had 2 and freshman Sayuri Serrano-Lopez had 1.
Chiloquin received the No. 25 seed in the 1A playoffs and will travel to No. 8 seed Trout Lake/Glenwood (18-4) Tuesday at a time TBD. It’s the third playoff appearance in four seasons for the Queens.
Crosspoint Christian received the No. 24 seed in the 1A playoffs and will travel to No. 9 seed Echo (20-6) Tuesday at a time TBD. It’s the first playoff appearance in program history (the school opened in 2020).
Trinity Lutheran 63, Bonanza 44 (Boys)
No. 1 seed Trinity Lutheran (17-8) outscored No. 2 seed Bonanza (19-5) 25-8 over the final 9:43 of game time to win the inaugural East Cascades Conference championship game.
The Antlers, who were selected to host the game prior to the season, led 11-7 in the first quarter before the Saints went on an 11-0 run in the last 3:20 of the period to go up 18-11. Down 33-27 at halftime, Bonanza drew within 38-36 with 2:49 left in the third quarter on a tip-in by sophomore Colby Medeiros, but Trinity Lutheran responded with another 11-0 run to push the lead to 49-36 entering the fourth.
Senior Victor Gonzalez led the Antlers with 15 points (including three triples), sophomore Dominick Lamboy had 9, Medeiros and junior Garrett Gallagher both had 7, senior Tristan McGann had 4 and senior Alex Renzetti had 2.
For the Saints, senior Andrew Imhoff had 27 points, junior Chace Nichols had 14, sophomore Chimi Gilbert had 10 (including two threes), senior Jackson Carroll had 4, and senior James Newton, junior Cooper Garus, sophomore Austin Imhoff and freshman Lane Slaughter all had 2.
Bonanza’s 44 points are its fewest of the season. The Antlers’ three lowest scoring outputs this year (44, 49 and 51 points) have all come against Trinity Lutheran.
Bonanza received the No. 9 seed in the 2A playoffs and will travel to No. 8 seed East Linn Christian (19-5) Saturday at a time TBD. It’s the fourth straight playoff appearance for the Antlers.
Trinity Lutheran received the No. 4 seed in the 2A playoffs and will host No. 13 seed Crosshill Christian (14-10) Saturday at a time TBD. It’s the Saints’ eighth consecutive playoff appearance, including the unofficial 1A playoffs held during the delayed and shortened 2020-21 season.
Chiloquin 67, Prospect Charter 37 (Boys)
No. 3 seed Chiloquin (14-10) booked its first 1A playoff appearance since 2017 with a win in the Mountain Valley League third place game at Central Christian.
The Panthers led 19-10 after the first quarter, 36-20 at halftime and 55-24 after the third quarter.
Sophomore Dilen Black led Chiloquin with 21 points (including five threes), freshman Denver Bravo had 13, senior Marques Hescock had 10, sophomore Edward Jones had 6, sophomore Lalan Wilder and freshman Dade Mitchell both had 5, freshmen Taylon Kalama, Nakoah Holster and James Jayne all had 2, and sophomore Ranin Wright had 1.
For No. 4 seed Prospect Charter (11-12), freshman Coltyn Lindstrom had 16 points, junior Luke Cox had 10, junior Nathan Cox had 9, and senior Aadon Asbill and freshman Dawson Sutton both had 1.
Chiloquin received the No. 25 seed in the 1A playoffs and will travel to No. 8 seed Dufur (20-6) Wednesday at a time TBD. Prospect Charter’s season is over.
Crosspoint Christian 69, Rogue Valley Adventist Academy 47
No. 1 seed Crosspoint Christian (21-5) won a rubber match with No. 2 seed Rogue Valley Adventist Academy (18-7) in the Mountain Valley League championship game to claim the program’s first league title (the school opened in 2020).
The Warriors led 21-9 after the first quarter, 36-22 at halftime and 48-35 after the third quarter at Central Christian.
Sophomore Caden Moritz had 20 points and 18 rebounds; junior Davis Hartwell (an Oregon State golf commit) had 19 points (including five threes), 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals; junior Brock Throne had 12 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks; senior Kody Sparks had 8 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals; sophomore Trey Johnston had 7 points and 5 rebounds; junior Clayton Turnage had 2 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists; and freshman Baylon Cundall had 1 point.
