High school basketball: Mazama boys, Bonanza girls get key wins, other weekend results

Mazama vs Hidden Valley

Basin high school basketball teams rang in the final month of the regular season with some big conference matchups this weekend. Here’s how everything unfolded. 

Friday

Bonanza 35, Lowell 22 (Girls)

Bonanza (11-8, 4-2) avenged a 41-24 loss at Lowell (8-12, 3-3) on Jan. 14 and remained tied for second place in the East Cascades Conference. 

Junior Maggie Ackley led the host Antlers with 15 points, 6 rebounds and 5 steals; senior Grace Kness had 11 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists; senior Mary Schooler had 5 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists; senior Haley Wierleske had 2 points; senior Vashti Arata had 1 point and 3 rebounds; sophomore Ayla DeLonge had 1 point; junior Briza Garcia had 5 steals, 3 rebounds and 2 assists; and sophomore Abby Hill had 4 rebounds. 

Bonanza shot 13-of-49 (27%) from the field, including 4-of-17 (24%) from 3-point range, and made 5-of-13 free throws (38%). 

Crosspoint Christian 39, Central Christian 35 (Girls)

Crosspoint Christian trailed 17-5 after the first quarter but held Central Christian to 18 points the rest of the game, allowing three field goals in the second half. 

The host Warriors trimmed the deficit to 24-16 at halftime and 27-24 entering the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Norah Radford and freshman Olivia Fenner shared the team lead with 10 points each, junior Charlotte Spalding had 8 (all in the fourth quarter), sophomore Chloe Butler had 6, junior Hannah Langford had 3 and freshman Sayuri Serrano-Lopez had 2.

For the Tigers, junior Tabitha Terry had 18 points (13 in the first quarter), sophomore Joslynn Terry had 10, sophomore Delaney McCaw had 3, freshman Morgan Vanbaggen had 2, and sophomores Alexa Epley and Olivia Milichichi both had 1. 

Crosspoint Christian shot 14-of-63 (22%) from the field, including 4-of-21 (19%) from 3-point range, and made 7-of-18 free throws (39%). Central Christian shot 11-of-38 (29%) from the field, including 1-of-5 from 3-point range, and made 12-of-29 free throws (41%). 

Phoenix 53, Klamath Union 37 (Girls)

Klamath Union (8-11, 3-4) lost to Phoenix (11-7, 4-3) for the second time in 10 days, dropping to fourth place in the Skyline Conference. 

Sophomore Lisette Watah led the visiting Pelicans with 15 points and 10 rebounds; junior Ariah Miller had 8 points; senior Andi Harmon had 4 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals; senior Leah Segura had 4 points and 3 rebounds; junior Bella Armijo had 2 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals; junior Anyssa Jimenez had 2 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals; senior Jazmin Wilson had 2 points and 3 steals; and senior Farrah Zumwalt had 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists. 

Klamath Union shot 10-of-62 (16%) from the field, including 2-of-12 (17%) from 3-point range, and made 15-of-23 free throws (65%). 

Hidden Valley 41, Mazama 36 (Girls)

Mazama (1-16, 0-6 Skyline Conference) had the ball down 38-36 with just over one minute remaining, but three straight empty possessions allowed Hidden Valley (7-11, 3-3) to seal the win at the free-throw line. 

Trailing 9-7 after the first quarter, the host Vikings took a 20-16 halftime lead thanks in part to an 8-0 run in the second. The Mustangs hit back-to-back threes in the final minute of the third quarter to take a 31-30 lead into the fourth.

Senior Addie Byington led Mazama with 10 points; sophomore Leah Hernandez had 9 points; senior London O’Brien had 7 points and 3 steals; freshman Reagan Holbrook had 6 points; and senior Mada Lee had 8 rebounds. 

2A No. 7 Bonanza 78, Lowell 53 (Boys)

Bonanza (14-3, 5-1 East Cascades Conference) cruised to its fourth straight win, beating Lowell (8-11, 2-4) for the second time this season.

The host Antlers led 23-12 after the first quarter, 44-27 at halftime and 64-40 after the third quarter.

Sophomore Colby Medeiros led Bonanza with 23 points (all in the first three quarters, including three triples), senior Victor Gonzalez had 14 (including three triples), senior Tristan McGann had 13, sophomore Isaac Noble had 12, junior Garrett Gallagher had 6, senior Alex Renzetti had 5, and sophomores Trace Hammerich and Dominick Lamboy both had 2.

For the Red Devils, junior Wyatt Smith had 20 points (including three triples), sophomore Jax Norcutt had 13, sophomore Gage Greco had 7, junior Carter Harris had 6 and sophomore Carson Ewan had 3.

1A No. 9 Crosspoint Christian 50, Central Christian 31 (Boys)

A shutout third quarter helped Crosspoint Christian beat Central Christian for the second time this season. 

The host Warriors led 19-11 after the first quarter, 34-24 at halftime and 48-24 after the third quarter. 

Junior Davis Hartwell had 12 points (on four threes), 6 rebounds and 2 steals; sophomore Caden Moritz had 12 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists; junior Clayton Turnage had 11 points and 4 rebounds; junior Brock Throne had 8 points, 17 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 assists; senior Kody Sparks had 5 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals; junior Collin Kleinjan had 2 points; sophomore Trey Johnston had 3 assists and 2 rebounds; and senior Paul Casson had 3 rebounds.

Crosspoint Christian shot 21-of-61 (34%) from the field, including 5-of-20 from 3-point range, and made 3-of-3 free throws. 

For the Tigers, junior Jase Johnson had 8 points (including two threes), sophomore James Frame and freshman Justice Babbitt both had 6, junior Wyatt Nickell had 4, freshman Colby McCaw had 3, and sophomore Ben Teixeira and freshman Connor Zimmerman had 2. 

Phoenix 72, Klamath Union 47 (Boys)

Klamath Union (6-13, 2-5 Skyline Conference) lost for the sixth time in seven games. 

Junior Landon Bogatay had 17 points, 3 steals, 2 rebounds and 2 assists; senior Bryce Petersen had 14 points (including 3-of-6 triples), 3 rebounds and 3 assists; junior Tildon Coffman had 9 points and 4 steals; senior Grafton Watah had 4 points, 3 steals and 2 blocks; senior Ryan Glidden had 3 points and 7 rebounds; and senior Malcolm Lassett-Hankins had 2 assists. 

The visiting Pelicans shot 16-of-53 (30%) from the field, including 5-of-22 (23%) from 3-point range, and made 10-of-17 free throws (59%).

Mazama 54, Hidden Valley 38 (Boys)

Mazama (9-9, 5-1) never trailed en route to a statement win that kept them tied for first place in the Skyline Conference.

The Vikings built a 15-2 lead heading into the second quarter after Hidden Valley (11-7, 3-3) senior Austyn Klingler–who scored a game-high 20 points in his team’s 55-37 win over Mazama on Jan. 21–picked up his second foul about halfway through the opening period. Klingler sat out the rest of the first half, but the Mustangs were still able to trim the deficit to 27-19 at halftime. 

Mazama maintained control of the game even as Klingler reentered in the third quarter, outscoring Hidden Valley 7-0 over the first 4:43 of the period. The Vikings led 40-26 entering the fourth quarter.

Senior Kai Hunt, who was held to 2 points in the Jan. 21 matchup with Klingler as his primary defender, led all scorers with 22 points (including 8-of-9 free throws) and 6 rebounds; senior Ryan Hayden had 15 points and 9 rebounds; senior Jordan Beals had 10 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists; senior Gabe Nanni had 5 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists; senior Dominic Melgoza had 2 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals; and junior Michael Piscitello had 2 rebounds. 

For the Mustangs, seniors Narin Stone and Joshua Iwamizu had 12 points each (Stone had 9 in the second quarter), junior Evan Neufeld had 6, Klingler had 4, and junior Eric Combs and sophomore Cooper Gagnon both had 2. 

Mazama shot 18-of-48 (38%) from the field, including 1-of-13 (8%) from 3-point range, and made 17-of-18 free throws (94%). Hidden Valley shot 14-of-56 (25%) from the field, including 3-of-28 (11%) from 3-point range, and made 7-of-11 free throws (64%).   

The Mustangs’ 38 points mark their fewest of the season. The Vikings have now reached .500 for the first time this season after a 1-6 start. 

Saturday

Crosspoint Christian 61, Willamette Valley Christian 26 (Girls)

Crosspoint Christian (12-8) broke the 60-point mark for the second time this season in a non-league matchup at Willamette Valley Christian (1-16). 

The visiting Warriors led 10-8 after the first quarter, 25-14 at halftime and 39-22 after the third quarter. 

Junior Hannah Langford led Crosspoint Christian with 17 points (9 in the second quarter), sophomore Norah Radford had 13, freshman Olivia Fenner had 10, junior Kim Pannell had 8, sophomore Chloe Butler and freshman Sayuri Serrano-Lopez both had 4, and junior Charlotte Spalding had 2. 

For Willamette Valley Christian, junior Rachel Zemanek had 12 points, sophomore Evelyn Klopfenstein had 6, junior Reese Dunn had 3, sophomore Addison Thompson and freshman Ailani Ochoa both had 2, and freshman Ellie Miller had 1. 

Lost River 46, 1A No. 10 Rogue Valley Adventist Academy 44 (Boys)

Two critical plays in the closing seconds helped Lost River (14-3) avoid a third straight loss.

Rogue Valley Adventist Academy (12-6) had the ball down by two with 34 seconds to go before the visiting Raiders forced a jump ball with 10 seconds left. The possession arrow gave Lost River the ball, forcing the Red Tail Hawks to foul.

The Raiders missed both free throws but got the rebound on the second shot, allowing them to run out the clock. 

Senior Tate Freeman led Lost River with 11 points, senior Kayden Hartman had 9 (on three triples), senior Noah O’Neill had 8 (4 in the third quarter), senior Beau Sanders had 6, junior Connor Guthrie had 5 (4 in the second quarter), senior Doug Jenkins had 4 (all in the second quarter) and junior Charles Overcash had 3. 

The Raiders shot 20-of-44 (45%) from the field, including 6-of-12 from 3-point range, and made 3-of-13 free throws (23%). They committed 28 turnovers.

For Rogue Valley Adventist Academy, junior Noah Lauesi had 16 points, sophomore Dawson Glasgow had 13 (including two threes), senior Braiden Perry had 7, senior Kekoa Cavagnol had 6 and sophomore Enoch Perry had 2.    

The Red Tail Hawks’ 44 points marked their second-fewest of the season.

1A No. 9 Crosspoint Christian 64, Willamette Valley Christian 58 (Boys)

Crosspoint Christian (17-3) extended its program-best winning streak to 10 games (including one forfeit) in a non-league matchup at Willamette Valley Christian (10-11).

The visiting Warriors led 13-11 after the first quarter before falling behind 28-26 at halftime. They regained the lead in the third quarter and pushed it to 44-34 entering the fourth. 

Sophomore Caden Moritz had 21 points (10 in the third quarter) and 9 rebounds; junior Brock Throne had 16 points (8 in the fourth quarter), 15 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals; junior Davis Hartwell had 11 points (8 in the second quarter, including two threes), 6 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists and 2 blocks; junior Clayton Turnage had 7 points and 8 rebounds; senior Kody Sparks had 7 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists; and sophomore Trey Johnston had 2 points and 3 assists.

Crosspoint Christian shot 26-of-56 (46%) from the field, including 3-of-13 (23%) from 3-point range, and made 9-of-14 free throws (64%). 

For Willamette Valley Christian, senior Ben Sellers had 21 points (including three triples), senior Caleb Reichelt had 14 (8 in the fourth quarter), junior Grady Orton had 12 (5 in the first quarter), senior Navi Monjaras had 9 and junior Cody Holland had 2.
