Sky Lakes Medical Center Restores TriCare Insurance Acceptance

A Two-Year Journey to Support Military Families and Veterans

Klamath Falls, OR — Sky Lakes Medical Center is pleased to announce the successful renewal of TriCare insurance acceptance, effective January 1, 2025. This achievement marks the end of a complex two-year process aimed at reinstating critical healthcare access for our military members, veterans, and their families, including those stationed at Kingsley Field Air National Guard Base.

This accomplishment reflects the collaborative efforts of Sky Lakes Medical Center’s senior leadership, local and national partners, and federal entities. In 2022, Sky Lakes provided more than 5,000 prescriptions to TriCare patients before the relationship with TriCare’s insurer, Express Scripts, was unexpectedly disrupted. The contract’s termination left Sky Lakes—and other independent pharmacies nationwide—unable to serve TriCare beneficiaries.

Despite this setback, Sky Lakes Medical Center remained steadfast in its commitment to military families, initiating negotiations directly with federal contracting representatives at Express Scripts to restore access.

Understanding the Challenge

The loss of TriCare in October 2022 was part of a national issue. Many independent pharmacies, including those within the Health Mart network, were excluded from Tricare coverage after their Pharmacy Services Administrative Organizations (PSAOs) declined to sign national agreements due to unprofitable terms. Major chains such as Albertsons and Rite Aid retained coverage through different agreements, leaving independent pharmacies and their patients in a difficult position.

For Sky Lakes, this meant seeking a direct federal contract outside of the PSAO system. This process required:

  • Senior Leadership Advocacy: Sky Lakes leadership prioritized the restoration of Tricare coverage, understanding its significance for military families in the region.
  • Partnerships: Collaboration with congressional representatives, Kingsley Field leadership, and other stakeholders ensured the issue received the attention it deserved.
  • Federal Negotiations: Sky Lakes worked closely with Express Scripts and the Department of Defense (DOD) to establish a direct agreement that met the needs of both parties while prioritizing patient care.

Restoring Access for Our Military Families

“Restoring TriCare coverage was not just about prescriptions; it was about reducing barriers to pharmaceutical care for those who serve our nation,” said Mychal Amos, Pharmacy Director, Sky Lakes Medical Center. “We are proud to once again provide the healthcare services our military families and veterans deserve.”

This milestone is a testament to Sky Lakes’ commitment to the community, especially its military population. The renewed contract will benefit not only Kingsley Field personnel but also other Tricare beneficiaries across the region.

Looking Ahead

Sky Lakes Medical Center’s successful negotiation demonstrates the importance of collaboration and perseverance in addressing challenges within the healthcare system. By working directly with Express Scripts and federal entities, the medical center has set a precedent for prioritizing patient needs over systemic hurdles.
