High school basketball: Mazama boys beat Klamath Union, Lost River boys beat Lakeview, other weekend results

Nearly every Basin team was in action Friday or Saturday, with some playing in league matchups. Here’s how each game turned out.

Friday

Lakeview 46, Lost River 31 (Girls) 

Lost River (6-4) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end at 3A Lakeview (6-7). 

Senior Avery Turner led the Raiders with 8 points and 5 rebounds; freshman Isabelle Herring had 7 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals; senior Mckenzie Dalton had 6 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals; senior Gemma Arceo-Bigoni had 4 points and 8 rebounds; senior Zuliana Cobian had 4 points; junior Macey Thomson had 2 points and 4 rebounds; and sophomore Amaris Hernandez had 3 steals and 2 rebounds.

Lost River hosts Culver (4-5) to open East Cascades Conference play at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Lakeview hosts St. Mary’s Medford (5-5) in a Southern Oregon Conference matchup at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. 

Bonanza 28, Etna 20 (Girls)

Both Bonanza (6-6) and Etna (6-8) scored their second-fewest points of the season as the Antlers won at home. 

Senior Grace Kness had 11 points (including three triples), 8 steals, 4 rebounds and 2 assists; senior Mary Schooler had 10 points (including two triples), 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists; junior Maggie Ackley had 5 points, 5 steals and 3 rebounds; sophomore Abby Hill had 2 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists; junior Briza Garcia had 5 steals and 3 rebounds; senior Haley Wierleske had 5 rebounds and 2 assists; and sophomores Hadley Woods and Ayla DeLonge both had 2 rebounds. 

Bonanza shot 11-of-50 (22%) from the field, including 5-of-19 (26%) from 3-point range, and made 1-of-4 free throws. 

Bonanza opens East Cascades Conference play at Lowell (5-9) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Etna opens Shasta Cascade League play at Trinity (13-4) at 7 p.m. Tuesday. 

Hayfork 52, Tulelake 39 (Girls)

Host Tulelake (6-9, 2-1 Evergreen League) lost to Hayfork (8-7, 3-0) for the fifth time in a row, with all five losses coming in the past two seasons. 

The game was tied 11-11 after the first quarter. The Timberjacks took a 17-13 lead at halftime and led 29-23 after the third quarter. 

Senior Makenzie Perez led the Honkers with 17 points, 5 steals, 4 rebounds and 2 blocks; junior Alejandra Perez had 11 points, 7 rebounds and 7 blocks; senior Madison Fine had 4 points and 4 rebounds; junior Josefina Mojica had 2 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks; senior Lizbeydi Garcia and junior McKenna Fine both had 2 points; and senior Maritza Chavolla had 1 point, 2 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks.

For Hayfork, junior Riley Bayley had 17 points and 2 steals; junior Lydia Yarbrough had 13 points, 7 rebounds, 7 steals and 2 assists; freshman Sidney Medellin had 8 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals; freshman Kaelynn Bayley had 7 points, 3 steals and 2 rebounds; senior Jade Buell had 5 points and 4 rebounds; and sophomore Annika Collins had 2 points and 2 steals.

Tulelake travels to Big Valley (2-9, 0-3) at 5 p.m. Monday. Hayfork travels to South Fork (3-5) at 6 p.m. Tuesday. 

Chiloquin 77, Gilchrist 49 (Boys)

Playing at home for the first time since Dec. 19, Chiloquin (6-5, 2-0 Mountain Valley League) put up its second-most points of the season and handed Gilchrist (3-5, 0-1) its third straight loss. 

Chiloquin travels to No. 10 Rogue Valley Adventist Academy (6-2, 3-0) at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Gilchrist hosts North Lake/Paisley Charter (5-6, 1-2) at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

2A No. 8 Lost River 53, Lakeview 39 (Boys)

Lost River (9-1) extended its winning streak to nine games with its second win over a 3A team this season.

The visiting Raiders led 17-15 after the first quarter, 26-23 at halftime and 42-35 after the third quarter.

Senior Tate Freeman led Lost River with 18 points (on 9-of-15 shooting), 12 rebounds and 4 steals; senior Kayden Hartman had 12 points (on 4-of-8 threes), 4 steals and 2 rebounds; junior Connor Guthrie had 7 points (all in the first quarter) and 2 rebounds; senior Noah O’Neill had 6 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals; senior Beau Sanders had 4 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals; junior Kyle Diaz had 3 points and 3 steals; and senior Doug Jenkins had 3 points.

For Lakeview (4-9), junior Parker Johnson had 12 points (including two threes), junior Kollin Tacchini had 9, senior Miles Maxwell had 7, senior Zach Dooley had 5, senior Kylor Lasley had 4 and junior Matt Finetti had 2.

The Raiders shot 24-of-52 (46%) from the field, including 7-of-14 from 3-point range, and made 0-of-4 free throws. The Honkers shot 15-of-39 (38%) from the field, including 4-of-11 (36%) from 3-point range, and made 3-of-4 free throws.

Lost River hosts Culver (5-6) to open East Cascades Conference play at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Lakeview hosts St. Mary’s Medford (5-6) in a Southern Oregon Conference matchup at 6 p.m. Tuesday.       

2A No. 6 Bonanza 63, Etna 44 (Boys)

Bonanza (9-1) won its ninth consecutive game and third against an NSCIF team this season. 

The host Antlers led 12-10 after the first quarter, 26-19 at halftime and 52-36 after the third quarter. Etna (5-7) has now lost five of its last six games. 

Senior Victor Gonzalez powered Bonanza with 17 points (including four triples), 11 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals; sophomore Colby Medeiros had 17 points (including three triples), 5 rebounds and 3 blocks; senior Tristan McGann had 11 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists; senior Alex Renzetti had 10 points, 12 rebounds and 2 steals; sophomore Isaac Noble had 6 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists; and sophomore Dominick Lamboy had 2 points, 5 steals and 2 rebounds. 

The Antlers shot 26-of-64 (41%) from the field, including 8-of-20 from 3-point range, and made 3-of-9 free throws. The Lions shot 16-of-57 (28%) from the field, including 6-of-21 (29%) from 3-point range, and made 6-of-12 free throws. Bonanza outrebounded Etna 36-25 and outscored the Lions 34-14 in the paint. 

Bonanza opens East Cascades Conference play at Lowell (6-7) at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Etna opens Shasta Cascade League play at Trinity (10-6) at 8 p.m. Tuesday.    

Hayfork 77, Tulelake 58 (Boys)

Visiting Hayfork (12-3, 3-0 Shasta Cascade League) matched its second-most points of the season to win its fifth straight game against Tulelake (3-11, 2-1). 

The Timberjacks led 27-18 after the first quarter, 45-35 at halftime and 68-38 after the third quarter. 

Sophomore Gio Alvarez led the Honkers with 26 points, followed by senior Daniel Garcia and junior Cooper Hall with 9 each, senior Anthony Loza with 6, junior Jose Zaragoza with 4, junior David Garcia with 2, and juniors Gus Guthrie and Rafael Hernandez with 1 each. 

For Hayfork, junior Levi Cavalli had 28 points, junior Evan Pickett and sophomore Tatem Wiley had 15 each (both made four threes), senior Anthony Bonelli had 7, senior Devin Nanez had 6, senior Hayden Trossauer had 4 and senior Sam Jessee had 2. 

Tulelake travels to Big Valley (6-3, 3-0) at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Hayfork travels to South Fork (9-6) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Saturday

4A No. 2 Henley 68, Phoenix 44 (Girls)

Henley (10-2, 2-0 Skyline Conference) coasted to its seventh straight win over Phoenix (8-5, 1-1).

The host Hornets led 22-10 after the first quarter, 40-17 at halftime and 58-30 after the third quarter. Henley’s 68 points were the most the Pirates have allowed since the 2018-19 season, and its scoring output could have been even higher if not for a 12-of-23 (52%) showing at the free throw line.

Junior Lily Fussell had 21 points (matching her career high and including three triples), 8 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists; senior Anna Harper had 16 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season; freshman Makayla Schroeder had 7 points and 14 rebounds, ending a streak of eight straight double-doubles; senior Bayli Ladner had 6 points (all in the first half), 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals; junior Senia Campos had 6 points (all in the first half), 3 rebounds and 2 assists; sophomore Prestyn Schade had 4 points (all in the third quarter), 8 assists, 6 steals and 2 rebounds; junior Kennedi Modin had 4 points and 2 assists; junior Maddie Sreniawski had 2 points and 3 rebounds; and junior Kaydence Nelson had 2 points.

For Phoenix, senior Alissa Alvarez had 21 points, sophomore Carsyn Sousa had 15, senior Mae Woodward had 5 and sophomore Lily Quintero had 3 (on the Pirates’ only made triple).  

Both teams face Mazama (0-11, 0-1) in their next games; Henley visits the Vikings at 6 p.m. Tuesday, while Phoenix hosts the Vikings at 6 p.m. Friday.

Klamath Union 58, Mazama 29 (Girls)

Klamath Union (6-7, 1-1 Skyline Conference) allowed its fewest points of the season to get back in the win column after two straight losses. 

Mazama (0-11, 0-1) played the Pelicans to a 5-5 tie in the first quarter, but the host squad climbed out to a 23-11 halftime lead that they pushed to 44-19 after the third quarter. 

Sophomore Lisette Watah led Klamath Union with 22 points (including three triples), followed by junior Bella Armijo with 12, junior Anyssa Jimenez with 10, senior Andi Harmon with 6, freshman Caylen Vannarath with 3, seniors Farrah Zumwalt and Leah Segura with 2 each and sophomore Gracia VanderWaal with 1. 

For the Vikings, senior London O’Brien had 12 points, senior Mada Lee had 6, junior Armeda Kirkpatrick had 5, and senior Addie Byington and freshman Reagan Holbrook both had 3. 

Both teams play at 6 p.m. Tuesday; Klamath Union travels to Hidden Valley (4-9, 0-1), while Mazama hosts No. 2 Henley (10-2, 2-0).  

1A No. 6 Crosspoint Christian 64, Prospect Charter 34 (Boys)

Crosspoint Christian (8-3, 2-1 Mountain Valley League) held Prospect Charter (6-5, 1-2) to its second-fewest points of the season for a convincing win. 

The Warriors led 18-5 after the first quarter, 38-20 at halftime and 56-27 after the third quarter. They’re now 6-1 in true road games this season. 

Sophomore Caden Moritz led Crosspoint Christian with 16 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals; junior Clayton Turnage had 12 points (on 6-of-11 shooting) and 18 rebounds; junior Davis Hartwell had 11 points, 5 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 steals; junior Brock Throne had 8 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocks; senior Kody Sparks had 7 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists; junior Collin Kleinjan and sophomore Trey Johnston both had 4 points and 2 rebounds; senior Paul Casson had 2 points and 2 rebounds; and senior Chase Knecht had 2 assists. 

The Warriors shot 27-of-67 (40%) from the field, including 3-of-18 (17%) from 3-point range, and made 7-of-10 free throws. 

Crosspoint Christian travels to Chiloquin (6-5, 2-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Prospect Charter travels to Central Christian (2-7, 0-3) at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.  

Phoenix 65, Henley 40 (Boys)

Phoenix (8-5, 2-0 Skyline Conference) took a 7-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game and remained in control the rest of the way.

The visiting Pirates led 19-5 after the first quarter and 38-16 at halftime. Henley (4-8, 0-2) found some life in the third quarter, outscoring Phoenix 17-10 to cut the deficit to 48-33, but the Pirates held the Hornets scoreless for the first 4:37 of the fourth while pushing it back to 22 points. 

Sophomore Carson Siems led Henley with 10 points (matching his career high set in the Hornets’ previous game), 4 steals and 3 rebounds; senior Bryson Montag had 8 points and 5 rebounds; junior Ries Schmerbach had 5 points (all in the first quarter) and 2 rebounds; senior Nolan Mick and sophomore Max Frank both had 4 points and 3 rebounds; sophomore Micah Ibarra had 4 points and 2 rebounds; senior Finn Charlton had 3 points; and sophomore Corbin Hamilton had 2 points and 2 steals.

For Phoenix, senior Tobias Akpan had 26 points, senior Martin Ortega had 14, senior Lucas Wihtol had 9, senior William Pyeatt had 7, senior Brayden Decker had 5 and junior Ethan Dobbins had 4. 

Both teams face Mazama (4-8, 1-0) in their next games; Henley visits the Vikings at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, while Phoenix hosts the Vikings at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Mazama 61, Klamath Union 54 (Boys)

Mazama (4-8, 1-0 Skyline Conference) wrapped up a four-game road swing and opened league play with a win at Klamath Union (5-8, 1-1). 

Senior Gabe Nanni led the Vikings with 19 points and 9 rebounds; senior Kai Hunt had 10 points (including two threes) and 9 assists; senior Dominic Melgoza had 9 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists; junior Jagger Jackson had 9 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals; senior Ryan Hayden had 6 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocks; senior Logan Harrington had 5 points; and junior Michael Piscitello had 3 points.

For the Pelicans, senior Grafton Watah had 27 points (including four threes), 2 rebounds and 2 steals; senior Ryan Glidden had 10 points and 7 rebounds; senior Malcolm Lassett-Hankins had 6 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists; junior Landon Bogatay had 6 points, 2 rebounds and 2 blocks; senior Bryce Petersen had 3 points and 6 assists; and senior Roland Vannarath had 2 points and 3 rebounds. 

Mazama shot 24-of-60 (40%) from the field, including 6-of-16 (38%) from 3-point range, and made 7-of-17 free throws (41%). Klamath Union shot 20-of-49 (41%) from the field, including 6-of-26 (23%) from 3-point range, and made 8-of-12 free throws. The Vikings outrebounded the Pelicans 34-20 and had 9 turnovers to their 24. 

Both teams play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday; Mazama hosts Henley (4-8, 0-2), while Klamath Union travels to Hidden Valley (8-5, 0-1).
