High school basketball: Klamath Union boys hold on to beat Henley, other results from Thursday

KU Boys basketball vs Henley

While the Klamath Union girls and boys hosted Henley to open Skyline Conference play Thursday night, the Mazama boys took a trip to 5A Redmond. Here’s how each game turned out.

No. 3 Henley 74, Klamath Union 36 (Girls)

Henley (9-2, 1-0) overcame a shaky start to cruise to its biggest win over Klamath Union (5-7, 0-1) in 11 years.

The Pelicans led 12-10 with 1:18 left in the first quarter, but the Hornets put together an 11-1 run (thanks in part to three Klamath Union turnovers) to take a 21-13 lead entering the second. A 10-0 run to close the half gave them a 43-23 lead that they expanded to 64-31 after the third quarter. The 33-point differential triggered a running clock for the fourth.

Henley freshman Makayla Schroeder recorded her eighth straight double-double with 23 points (13 in the first quarter) and 14 rebounds (10 in the first half); sophomore Prestyn Schade had a career-high 19 points (9 in the second quarter), 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals; junior Lily Fussell had 12 points (8 in the third quarter), 8 rebounds and 5 steals; senior Anna Harper had 9 points and 5 rebounds; junior Senia Campos had 6 points; junior Kennedi Modin had 3 points and 2 assists; junior Kaydence Nelson had 2 points and 3 rebounds; senior Bayli Ladner had 2 steals; and junior Maddie Sreniawski had 2 rebounds.

For Klamath Union, junior Anyssa Jimenez had 9 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals; senior Leah Segura had 9 points and 4 rebounds; senior Andi Harmon had 8 points (4 on made free throws in the first quarter) and 6 rebounds; sophomore Lisette Watah had 7 points (6 in the second quarter), 3 steals, 2 rebounds and 2 assists; junior Bella Armijo had 3 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals; and seniors Jazmin Wilson and Farrah Zumwalt both had 2 steals.

Neither team made a 3-pointer, and the Pelicans committed 37 turnovers. Henley’s 38-point margin of victory was its largest against Klamath Union since an 80-39 win during the 2013-14 season. The Hornets’ 74 points were their most since their season opener.

Henley hosts Phoenix (8-4, 1-0) at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Klamath Union hosts Mazama (0-10, 0-0) at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Klamath Union 54, Henley 51 (Boys)

Henley (4-7, 0-1) missed two looks at a game-tying three in the final 10 seconds, giving Klamath Union (5-7, 1-0) its first win over the Hornets since the delayed and shortened 2020-21 season.

The Pelicans led 40-37 entering the fourth quarter, but Henley went on a 7-0 run in the first two minutes of the frame to take a 44-40 lead. Klamath Union responded with five straight points from senior Grafton Watah to go up 45-44 less than one minute later. The lead changed hands two more times, with the Pelicans taking it back for good at 47-46 on a pair of Watah free throws with 3:50 remaining.

The teams alternated turnovers until Klamath Union senior Roland Vannarath scored through three defenders in the paint to make it 49-46 with 2:45 to go. Vannarath then drew a charging call on the ensuing Hornets possession, fouling out senior Bryson Montag. Watah then drained a contested jumper from the right elbow, but Henley got it back to a one-score game at 51-48 after sophomore Micah Ibarra made two free throws with 1:59 on the clock.

After the teams traded empty possessions, Pelicans senior Malcolm Lassett-Hankins tried a 3-pointer with just over one minute remaining. He missed the shot, but classmate Ryan Glidden tipped him the rebound on the block, and he converted the second-chance opportunity to put his team up 53-48.

The Hornets weren’t done yet; Ibarra nailed a corner three with 38 seconds left to cut it to 53-51. However, they failed to capitalize after Klamath Union missed a pair of free throws, with Vannarath grabbing a crucial rebound on what would have been a go-ahead three at the other end.

In addition to Montag, Henley did not have senior Nolan Mick and sophomore Carson Siems–who combined for 16 points in the second half–on the floor for the final possession. Mick fouled out after Ibarra’s three, and Siems did the same after the Hornets’ subsequent miss.

The Pelicans led 13-8 at the end of the first quarter and 28-18 at halftime. The Hornets used a 16-4 run to tie the game at 34-34 with 2:53 to go in the third.

Watah finished with 25 points (10 in the fourth quarter), 3 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 blocks while shooting 9-of-15 from the field; junior Landon Bogatay had 10 points (all in the first half, including two threes) and 8 rebounds; Lassett-Hankins had 8 points, 5 steals, 3 rebounds and 2 assists; senior Bryce Petersen had 5 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds; Glidden had 4 points and 3 rebounds; and Vannarath had 2 points and 6 rebounds.

Ibarra led Henley with 13 points, including three triples; Siems had a career-high 10 points and 3 steals; Montag had 9 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals; sophomore Corbin Hamilton had 6 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists; Mick and junior Ries Schmerbach both had 6 points; and senior Finn Charlton had 1 point.

The Pelicans’ win snapped a six-game losing streak against the Hornets.

Henley hosts Phoenix (7-5, 1-0) at 5 p.m. Saturday. Klamath Union hosts Mazama (3-8, 0-0) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

5A No. 2 Redmond 87, Mazama 69 (Boys)

Mazama (3-8) put up a fight against Redmond (9-3); the Vikings trailed 42-32 at halftime and 67-52 after the third quarter.
