Henley 60, Banks 53 (Girls)
In a rematch of last year’s thriller between these teams, Henley (6-1) secured the win with a 12-3 run over the final three minutes.
A triple by Banks (7-3) junior Emily Graham that put the 3A Braves up 50-48 with 3:35 remaining was the sixth of seven lead changes in a fourth quarter that began tied at 39-39. Hornets freshman Makayla Schroeder scored the next six points after Graham’s shot, including a putback of her own miss that gave Henley the lead for good with just under two minutes remaining. With 1:26 on the clock, Schroeder sank two free throws to make the score 54-50. It remained a multiple-possession game the rest of the way.
The game-ending run wasn’t the only big stretch of the contest; after falling down 7-2 in the first three minutes, Henley put together a 9-0 run over the next three and took a 15-12 lead into the second quarter. The Hornets extended the lead to 25-19 before a 9-2 Banks run over the last 2:45 of the period sent them to halftime trailing 28-27.
Seven straight points for the Braves gave them a 37-30 lead with 3:30 left in the third quarter. Junior Senia Campos scored seven of Henley’s nine points the rest of the frame, including a three to even the score with 18.3 seconds to go.
This was only the second time in the past three seasons that Banks has allowed 60 points or more.
Schroeder finished with 22 points (8 in the first quarter and 10 in the fourth) and 13 rebounds, recording her fourth straight double-double. She also made 10-of-11 free throws.
