The Henley girls and boys were the only Basin teams in action Monday as they both hosted 3A Lakeview. Here’s how each game unfolded.
Girls: Henley 64, Lakeview 30
Playing for the first time in 11 days, Henley (5-1) led 14-6 at the end of the first quarter and went on a 9-0 run to start the second.
The Hornets were up 37-16 at halftime and 59-20 after the third quarter. Lakeview (3-7) did not score in the last 5:27 of the third.
Junior Lily Fussell led Henley with 21 points (13 in the second quarter), 10 steals, 2 rebounds and 2 assists; freshman Makayla Schroeder recorded her third straight double-double with 15 points and 18 rebounds; senior Anna Harper had 10 points (8 in the third quarter), 8 rebounds and 3 steals; junior Kennedi Modin had 6 points; junior Senia Campos had 5 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists; senior Bayli Ladner had 4 points and 2 rebounds; and sophomore Prestyn Schade had 3 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 1 block.
For the Honkers, junior Ashlynn Shullanberger had 9 points, junior Kamry Stratton had 7, senior Nadine Mendias and junior Danica Shullanberger had 6 each, and senior Sofia Zendejas had 2.
Henley faces 3A Banks (7-2) in its first of three games at the Sisters Shootout at 5:15 p.m. Thursday. Lakeview hosts Mazama (0-8) at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Boys: Henley 50, Lakeview 49 (OT)
Senior Finn Charlton sank a free-throw line jumper with 4.8 seconds left in overtime to deliver Henley (3-3) a comeback win over Lakeview (3-7).
The Hornets, who were without senior starter Bryson Montag (illness), led 10-9 after a first quarter that featured four lead changes and went into halftime down 18-15. The Honkers opened the third quarter with a 6-0 run that extended their lead to 24-15 with 6:17 remaining, but Henley gradually regained ground over the remainder of the period, and a buzzer-beating three by junior Sam Bennett got the Hornets within 35-34 to start the fourth.
The fourth quarter featured two lead changes and two ties. A putback by Mick with 3:26 to go evened the score at 43-43 and turned out to be the last points of regulation. Both teams had multiple chances to take the lead in the final minute, but neither was able to capitalize.
With 1:19 left in overtime, Lakeview senior Zach Dooley banked in a shot through contact on the right block to earn an and-one opportunity. He made the free throw, putting the Honkers up 49-46. The Hornets responded with a baseline drive by senior Nolan Mick to make it 49-48 with 1:06 to go, then forced a turnover on the ensuing possession. A well-set screen by Mick freed up Charlton for the go-ahead shot.
Henley used its last foul to give when Lakeview inbounded under its own basket, forcing the Honkers to inbound again with 3.6 seconds on the clock. They were unable to get a shot off.
Sophomore Corbin Hamilton led the Hornets with 12 points, 2 assists and 2 steals; sophomore Micah Ibarra had 10 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals; Mick had 9 points and 8 rebounds; junior Ries Schmerbach had 9 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals; Charlton had 5 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists; Bennett had 3 points; junior Jeremiah Brunick had 2 points and 3 rebounds; and sophomore Carson Siems had 3 rebounds and 3 steals.
For Lakeview, junior Kollin Tacchini had 24 points (including five triples), junior Matt Finetti had 6, Dooley and fellow seniors Porter Johnson and Kylor Lasley had 5 each, and junior Parker Johnson and senior Miles Maxwell had 2 each.
Henley faces 3A Valley Catholic (4-3) in its first of three games at the Sisters Shootout at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Lakeview hosts Mazama (1-6) at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
