Here’s a review of Friday’s Basin high school basketball action.
Boys
Henley 56, Ashland 49
Henley (2-2) went on the road and knocked off 5A Ashland (2-2) in a game that featured five ties and 11 lead changes.
The Hornets entered the fourth quarter trailing 39-38 but outscored the Grizzlies 6-0 over the first three minutes of the period. Ashland drew within 50-49 with just over two minutes remaining on a 3-pointer by junior Quillian Tourzan; Henley answered immediately with a bucket by sophomore Carson Siems and forced five empty possessions by the Grizzlies to close the game.
The Hornets led 13-11 after the first quarter and trailed 30-29 at halftime.
Sophomore Corbin Hamilton had 12 points and 4 assists for Henley; sophomore Micah Ibarra had 12 points and 2 assists; senior Nolan Mick had 11 points and 2 assists; junior Ries Schmerbach had 7 points; senior Bryson Montag had 6 points and 4 assists; Siems had 5 points; and sophomore Max Frank had 3 points. Hamilton, Mick, Schmerbach, Siems and Frank all set career-high scoring marks, while Ibarra matched his.
For Ashland, senior Jojo Harrower had 22 points (10 in the second quarter), Tourzan had 12 (10 in the second half), senior John Harper had 8, senior Diego Hernandez and junior Isaac Matsdorf both had 3 and sophomore Bodi Wieczorek had 1.
Ashland hosts Yreka (2-4) at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Henley travels to Yreka at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Sisters 72, Mazama 50
Mazama (1-4) dropped its second straight home game as 3A Sisters (3-1) beat its second 4A opponent this season (the Outlaws won 68-65 at Cottage Grove Dec. 6).
Senior Gabe Nanni led the Vikings with 17 points (including 5-of-9 triples), 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks; senior Ryan Hayden had 11 points and 4 rebounds; senior Dominic Melgoza had 10 points, 6 rebounds (all defensive), 3 assists and 3 steals; junior Jagger Jackson had 4 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists; junior Michael Piscitello had 4 points and 4 rebounds; sophomore Brody Mahon had 2 points and 2 rebounds; and senior Connor Baker had 2 points.
Mazama was whistled for 21 fouls, while Sisters was called for 8. The Vikings also had 18 turnovers to the Outlaws’ 7.
Both teams play at 1:30 p.m. Saturday; Mazama hosts Madras (4-0), while Sisters travels to Klamath Union (1-3).
Madras 64, Klamath Union 46
Klamath Union (1-3) lost its home opener as Madras (4-0) won its first true road game.
Senior Grafton Watah led the Pelicans with 22 points (on 8-of-16 shooting), 4 rebounds and 2 steals; junior Jason Xu had 8 points and 4 rebounds; senior Bryce Petersen had 6 points and 3 assists; junior Tildon Coffman had 6 points and 2 rebounds; junior Landon Bogatay had 4 points and 3 rebounds; senior Malcolm Lassett-Hankins had 5 rebounds and 2 assists; senior Ryan Glidden had 4 rebounds; and senior Roland Vannarath had 3 rebounds.
Klamath Union committed 32 turnovers and shot 16-of-43 (37%) from the field, including 3-of-16 (19%) from beyond the arc.
Both teams play at 1:30 p.m. Saturday; Klamath Union hosts Sisters (3-1), while Madras travels to Mazama (1-4).
Bonanza 69, Umpqua Valley Christian 31
Bonanza (1-1) won its home opener and handed 1A Umpqua Valley Christian (3-1) its first loss in the Monarchs’ first road game.
Senior Victor Gonzalez led the Antlers with 16 points, senior Tristan McGann had 15, junior Garrett Gallagher had 11, sophomore Dominick Lamboy had 7, senior Alex Renzetti had 6, sophomores Colby Medeiros and Isaac Noble both had 5, and senior Daniel Jones and sophomore Trace Hammerich both had 2.
Umpqua Valley Christian travels to Chiloquin (2-2) at 2 p.m. Saturday. Bonanza hosts Tulelake at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Girls
Sisters 64, Mazama 44
Mazama (0-5) lost its home opener as 3A Sisters (3-1) won for the second time this week.
Seniors Addie Byington and London O’Brien led the Vikings with a respective 17 and 11 points.
Both teams play at 12 p.m. Saturday; Mazama hosts Madras (3-1), while Sisters travels to Klamath Union (1-3).
Madras 69, Klamath Union 56
Klamath Union (1-3) lost its home opener as Madras (3-1) won its third game in four days.
Both teams play at 12 p.m. Saturday; the Pelicans host Sisters (3-1), while the White Buffaloes travel to Mazama.
Brookings-Harbor 48, Bonanza 33
Bonanza (1-2) lost the second of a three-game road stretch to 3A Brookings-Harbor (3-2).
The Antlers travel to Gold Beach (2-2) at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The Bruins travel to Pleasant Hill (3-3) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
Chiloquin 49, Crook County JV 17
Chiloquin (4-1) beat 4A Crook County’s JV squad at the Gilchrist Holiday Tournament.
The Panthers host Umpqua Valley Christian (1-1) at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
Willows 50, Tulelake 21
Tulelake (4-4) lost to Willows (2-5) in the consolation round of the Trinity Holiday Classic.
The Honkers meet Hayfork (1-6) in the seventh place game at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
