The Henley and Klamath Union girls and boys opened their seasons at the Yreka Invitational Thursday. Here’s how each of their games turned out.
Henley 84, Orland 43 (Girls)
A Dottie Davis and-one got Orland (0-1) within 10-7 with 3:11 to go in the first quarter, but Henley (1-0) went on a 15-1 run to close the period en route to a blowout win.
The Hornets led 49-22 at halftime and 64-33 after the third quarter. They reached the running clock margin (40 points) with 5:05 left in the fourth.
Senior Anna Harper led Henley with 21 points (11 in the first quarter), 8 rebounds and 2 steals; sophomore Prestyn Schade had 15 points (13 in the first half), 7 steals, 4 assists and 2 rebounds; freshman Makayla Schroeder had 15 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals; junior Lily Fussell had 14 points (8 in the second quarter), 3 rebounds and 3 steals; junior Senia Campos had 6 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals; senior Bayli Ladner had 5 points, 3 assists and 3 rebounds; junior Kaydence Nelson had 4 points and 2 steals; junior Kennedi Modin had 2 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block; and junior Brooklyn Conrad had 2 points.
For the Trojans, juniors Lily Rowe and Caydance Kremer each had 11 points (including three triples for Kremer), junior Angie Bernal had 8 (including two triples), senior Kourtney Sites had 4, Davis (a junior) had 3, and sophomore Abby Halsey and junior Kayleigh Padgent each had 2.
Henley’s 84 points mark its highest scoring output since last year’s Yreka Invitational championship game. The Hornets had a total of 22 steals.
Henley will face McKinleyville (3-0) in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Friday. Orland will face Glide (0-2) in the consolation round at 11 a.m. Friday.
Orland 58, Henley 31 (Boys)
Orland (2-0) started the second quarter with an 8-7 lead and outscored Henley (0-1) 21-7 in the period to take a 29-14 halftime lead.
The Hornets never got closer than 12 points in the second half. They trailed 46-25 at the end of the third quarter.
Sophomore Micah Ibarra led Henley with 12 points (including three triples) and 9 rebounds; senior Finn Charlton had 11 points (including three triples); sophomore Corbin Hamilton had 4 points (all in the first quarter), 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block; sophomore Max Frank had 2 points and 4 rebounds; junior Jeremiah Brunick had 2 points; and senior Nolan Mick had 3 rebounds.
For the Trojans, senior Dominick Bose had 14 points (12 in the first half), senior Preston Carlson had 10 (including two triples), senior Jayden Thompson had 9, sophomore Sal Avila and junior Derek Rubio had 8 each, junior Alejandro Velasquez had 5 and sophomore Mondo Trenado had 4.
The loss knocks Henley out of contention for back-to-back Yreka Invitational championships. The Hornets won the title under a round-robin format last year.
Henley will face Red Bluff (1-1) in the consolation round at 9:30 a.m. Friday. Orland will face Eureka (1-0) in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
Del Norte 52, Klamath Union 45 (Girls)
Del Norte (2-1) erased a 39-33 Klamath Union (0-1) lead with a 6-0 run in the first 2:32 of the fourth quarter and outscored the Pelicans 9-2 over the final 3:07.
The Warriors led 12-9 after the first quarter and 25-18 at halftime. Klamath Union went on a 7-0 run in the first 1:09 of the third quarter and got six straight points from sophomore Lisette Watah in the final 45 seconds of the period.
Senior Andi Harmon led the Pelicans with 18 points, followed by Watah with 14, senior Jazmin Wilson with 6, junior Anyssa Jiminez with 4, junior Ariah Miller with 2 and senior Leah Segura with 1.
Klamath Union will face Yreka (1-1) in the consolation round at 2 p.m. Friday. Del Norte will face Brookings-Harbor (1-0) in the semifinals at 8 p.m. Friday.
Del Norte 62, Klamath Union 54 (Boys)
Klamath Union (0-1) nearly overcame a 13-point deficit but missed multiple chances to tie or take the lead in the second half.
Del Norte (3-0) led 17-7 after the first quarter and went up 28-15 with 4:32 remaining in the second. Trailing 32-21 to start the third quarter, the Pelicans clawed their way back to within 34-33 when senior Malcolm Lassett-Hankins hit a three with 3:16 to go, only to fall back down 44-38 by the end of the frame.
Klamath Union scored the first four points of the fourth quarter and got within 47-45 when junior Landon Bogatay drained a three with 6:24 on the clock. That was as close as the Pelicans got for the rest of the game; they didn’t score again until the 3:55 mark, at which point the Warriors had pushed the lead back out to 53-45.
Senior Grafton Watah led Klamath Union with 23 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 assists; Lassett-Hankins had 8 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists; Bogatay had 8 points and 5 rebounds; senior Roland Vannarath had 5 points and 3 steals; senior Bryce Petersen had 5 points, 2 assists and 2 steals; and junior Jason Xu had 5 points.
The Pelicans had a total of 30 turnovers and shot 16-of-52 (32%) from the field, including 4-of-25 (16%) from 3-point range.
Klamath Union will face Brookings-Harbor (0-1) in the consolation round at 12:30 p.m. Friday. Del Norte will face Yreka (1-0) in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
