KLAMATH FALLS, Ore – The Mazama Vikings earned the title of ‘Basin’s Best’ after winning the tournament by the same name on September 7th. The event was hosted at Klamath Union High School and featured teams from Henley, Crosspoint Christian, Bonanza, Chiloquin, and Lost River.
The event began with pool play at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and after six games Mazama, Klamath Union, Henley, and Bonanza moved on to the semifinals to battle for the title.
Henley faced Bonanza in the semifinal. It was a swift 2-0 (25-14; 25-11) victory for the Hornets. Abby Dubose led the Hornets with nine kills and Makayla Schroeder had eight kills. Hailey Paulson set her team up for success, racking up 18 assists and five aces. The Vikings met Klamath Union in their semifinal match. The first game was close, with Mazama edging the Pelicans 26-24. The Vikings earned a win in the second game 25-19 to meet Henley in the title game.
Though Klamath Union was eliminated in the semifinal, they had key performances from multiple players. Angie Lowry paced the squad with 11 kills and four aces. Jacie Madden added nine kills. Lily Huck tallied 14 digs to go with eight kills for her effort. Olivia Cruz collected 35 assists, helping the Pelicans to a top-four finish at the event.
In the title match, Henley jumped out to a 1-0 game lead after claiming the opener 25-15. Mazama rallied back to win 25-15 and 15-5 to secure the championship. Kahlia Cage had eight kills in the loss for Henley and Jenna Melsness added nine digs and four aces in the final match.
Mazama got key contributions all tournament long from a several players. Cali Bitzer led her team with a standout performance, racking up 30 kills, 13 aces, and a serving average of 94.9%, along with 12 digs, two assists, and seven blocks for the event. Sydney Baker contributed with 17 kills, seven aces, eight blocks, and 19 digs. London O’Brien also shined with 65 assists and 12 aces.
The prep volleyball season continues September 10th with Henley visiting Lakeview and Bonanza playing La Pine. On September 11th Klamath Union challenges Yreka. Mazama’s next match is September 12th at Cascade Christian.
