KCSO warns of persistent phone scams

sheriff

The Klamath County Sheriff’s Office continues to receive complaints from citizens who have become victims of phone scams or who have been contacted by scammers who try to convince them to supply personal or financial information over the phone.

The Sheriff’s Office routinely issues warnings to this effect and countless attempts have been thwarted due to increasing public awareness of the attempts to steal private and personal information. Yesterday alone, we received two notifications from citizens who were not fooled.

As in past scam calls, yesterday’s caller pretended to be a deputy or a law enforcement supervisor calling to collect on a reported fine or failure to appear for jury duty. The scammer used the names of actual law enforcement officials and their phone number on Caller ID appears legitimate. There are methods available to trick Caller ID into displaying a false number. Please do not fall for these theft attempts. The attempts are often very convincing….please just hang up the phone.

The Sheriff’s Office does not call and attempt to gain personal and financial information from citizens to pay fines in order to avoid arrest or to prevent an arrest warrant from being issued.

If you would like more information on phone scams and how to avoid them, please research the topic on any popular web browser and you will find a large amount of information readily available.
