Annie Campos dominated in the circle and at the plate as Henley softball (7-3, 2-0) opened Skyline Conference play by sweeping a doubleheader at Phoenix (2-5, 0-2). Here’s how each game unfolded Saturday.
Game 1: Henley 24, Phoenix 0 (4 innings)
Henley batted around in the top of the first inning, scoring six runs–including four before recording their first out. Campos struck out the side in the bottom of the inning.
Henley was held to one run in the second (Ahllona Benson scored on a passed ball) and none in the third. Meanwhile, Campos allowed only one hit in each inning.
The Hornets exploded in the top of the fourth, batting around twice and scoring 17 runs, starting with a two-run home run by Campos. She then pitched a hitless bottom half of the inning to end the game via run rule. In the first game, Campos was 4-for-5 with 5 RBI; Jillian Vickery was 1-for-4 with 4 RBI; Layliana Segura was 2-for-2 with 3 RBI; Anna Harper was 1-for-5 with 3 RBI; Samatha Moore was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI; Gracie White was 2-for-2 with 1 RBI; and Natalie Hudson was 1-for-3 with 1 RBI. In the circle, Campos allowed 2 hits in 4 innings while striking out 9.
Henley’s 24 runs were their most in a game since 2022.
Game 2: Henley 12, Phoenix 1
Henley kept the momentum going early in the second leg of the doubleheader but cooled off for a while after the first two innings. The Hornets scored three runs in the top of the first, with the first two coming on an Annie Campos triple (giving her the cycle on the day). Samantha Moore drove in Suzy Nichols on a double in the top of the second, which would be the last run Henley scored until the top of the sixth.
The Hornets managed just two hits in the third, fourth and fifth innings as Phoenix pitcher Keelie Woodside found a groove. Entering the sixth, she had allowed 4 earned runs on 5 hits with 7 strikeouts and 4 walks. Then, she issued a walk, allowed a single and 2-RBI double and hit the next batter she faced, prompting Pirates head coach Kevin Scoggins to relieve her. The pitching change did nothing to stop Henley’s momentum; the Hornets ended up batting around and led 10-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
Meanwhile, Campos started in the circle again for Henley after only throwing 68 pitches in Game 1. She was relieved after 5 innings in Game 2, where she allowed 1 hit and issued 1 walk while striking out 9. Gracie White pitched the last 2 innings, allowing 1 earned run on 1 hit and walking 2.
Phoenix’s only run of the day came on a Destiny Christlieb sacrifice fly in the sixth that denied the Hornets their second run-rule win of the day. Henley’s final two runs came in the top of the seventh.
In the second game, Campos was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI; Belle Birch was 3-for-5 with 3 RBI; Anna Harper was 1-for-4 with 2 RBI; Samantha Moore was 1-for-2 with 1 RBI; Layliana Segura was 2-for-5 with 1 RBI; Jillian Vickery was 1-for-4 with 1 RBI; Haydn Higgins was 0-for-1 with 1 RBI (on a groundout).
Henley hosts Klamath Union (5-4, 0-2) at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
