Ahead of tax day, IRS reminds taxpayers of free filing options

Taxpayers with families who want to file free federal tax returns have several options that offer online tax preparation, electronic filing and direct deposit of refunds for free.

IRS Free File

 

Military families can file with MilTax

MilTax online software is available for military families, military retirees, eligible veterans and is offered through the Department of Defense. Eligible taxpayers can use MilTax to prepare and electronically file their federal tax returns and up to three state returns for free.

In-person tax filing help

Qualified taxpayers can also find free one-on-one tax preparation help nationwide through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs.

IRS Direct File

Direct File is available for eligible taxpayers reporting certain kinds of income and claiming limited credits and deductions in: Arizona, California, Florida, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Eligible taxpayers can file 2023 federal tax returns online, for free, directly with the IRS for the first time.
