Swan Lake Energy Storage Project finalizes design, nears start of construction

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Rye Development announced it has completed the geotechnical work and final project design for the Swan Lake Energy Storage Project Tuesday, keeping it on target to begin construction in Klamath County later this year. 

The Swan Lake Energy Storage Project is a closed-loop pumped storage facility, which generates electricity by circulating water between two reservoirs through an underground pipe. Once complete, Rye Development said the facility will provide 400 megawatts of renewable energy, saving the equivalent of 595,063 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year. 

The facility is scheduled to begin operation in 2028. A study by ECONorthwest estimated that the Swan Lake Energy Storage Project will create 3,360 jobs in Oregon during its construction, including 480 in Klamath County. 

Rye Development said it is now preparing to submit a final amendment to its construction and operation license to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
