Skyline Conference releases all-league basketball selections

More than two dozen players and coaches from Henley, Mazama and Klamath Union received postseason honors from the Skyline Conference last week.

Postseason honors are determined by a vote of the league’s coaches, who are not allowed to vote for themselves or their own players except for one honorable mention selection.

On the girls side, Henley and Klamath Union shared player of the year and coach of the year honors after splitting the league title. The Hornets’ Annie Campos and the Pelicans’ Dianara Peña took home the former, while Henley’s Randy Denson and Klamath Union’s John Najar took home the latter.

Campos led Henley in every statistical category, averaging 16 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 4.3 steals and 0.6 blocks per game. She was also named to the Skyline Conference all-defensive team and went on to be the only unanimous first team all-tournament selection at the 4A girls state championships after powering the Hornets to their first title since 2012.

Peña was Klamath Union’s second leading scorer, averaging 12.4 points per game. She also averaged 2.6 rebounds and led the Pelicans in steals (2.6), assists (2.5) and blocks (0.8). She went on to be named first team all-tournament at the 4A championships after helping Klamath Union to a fourth place finish–the highest in program history.

Denson captured his second straight Skyline Conference championship in his fourth season at Henley, while Najar led Klamath Union to their first league title since 1990 in his third year at the helm. The Pelicans went 3-5 in Skyline Conference play in 2022-23.

Anna Harper was Henley’s second leading scorer with 9.7 points per game and co-leader in rebounds with 7.2 per game but did not receive any league honors because she was out for all but two of the Hornets’ Skyline Conference games. She was named first team all-tournament at the 4A state championships after averaging 14 points (third among all players) and 10.3 rebounds (leading all players).

On the boys side, Markus McCreadie was named player of the year and earned all-defensive team honors after averaging 19.9 points, 12.4 rebounds, 3.7 blocks, 1.9 assists and 1.1 steals per game, leading Henley in the first three categories. The Hornets won their third straight Skyline Conference championship and reached their second straight state tournament this season.

Phoenix’s Troy McNichols won coach of the year honors after nearly pulling off a worst-to-first turnaround. The Pirates had a chance to win the Skyline Conference title at Henley on the last night of league play–a matchup that ended with McCreadie blocking a layup at the buzzer that would’ve forced overtime. Phoenix finished last in the Skyline Conference with a 2-6 league record in 2022-23.
