Henley girls basketball advanced to the state semifinals while the Klamath Union girls and Henley boys suffered losses in their quarterfinal games at the OSAA 4A Basketball Championships at Forest Grove High School Thursday. Here’s how each game unfolded.
No. 4 Cascade 51, No. 5 Klamath Union 28
The shots just didn’t fall for Klamath Union (17-4).
The Pelicans–playing in the state quarterfinals for the first time since 1989 and vying for their first semifinal appearance in program history–shot 20.8% from the field and 11.1% from three as Cascade (18-7) ended up rolling to a win.
Both teams came out of the gate ice cold, combining to shoot 5-of-29 (17.2%) from the field in the first quarter as the Cougars took a 7-4 lead. Cascade warmed up a bit in the second quarter and went into halftime leading 21-9.
The Cougars’ form continued to improve in the second half, and the Pelicans simply couldn’t match them. In the third quarter, Cascade shot 7-of-16 (43.8%) from the field and Klamath Union shot 4-of-19 (21.1%). The Cougars pushed the lead to 40-18 entering the fourth.
Keely Hall was named the Pelicans player of the game after finishing with 9 points and 18 rebounds; Andi Harmon had 6 points and 3 rebounds; Dianara Peña had 5 points, 4 assists and 2 rebounds; Kshalee Thomas had 3 points, 3 steals and 2 rebounds; Erin Garcia had 2 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists; Bella Armijo had 2 points; Anyssa Jimenez had 1 point; and Dakota Neese had 3 rebounds.
Klamath Union outrebounded Cascade 41-37 and had 17 turnovers to the Cougars’ 13.
Hawaii golf signee Maddie Dustin led Cascade with 20 points, 9 rebounds and 2 steals; Rozalynn Schmunk was named the Cougars player of the game after finishing with 12 points, 11 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 blocks; Pearl Pruett had 7 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists; Breeci Hampton had 5 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists; Olivia Bennett had 4 points and 2 assists; and Lexi Newton had 3 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals; and Karson Shank had 2 rebounds.
Klamath Union will face No. 9 seed Stayton (19-5) in the consolation round at 9 a.m. Friday. Cascade will make their first 4A semifinal appearance since 2018 against No. 1 seed Astoria (22-4) at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
No. 2 Junction City 54, No. 7 Henley 45 (Boys)
A dream first half for Henley (16-8) gave way to a nightmare fourth quarter, dashing the Hornets’ hopes of an upset and a second straight 4A semifinal appearance.
Junction City (22-3), who beat a Markus McCreadie-less Henley 67-50 at the Sisters Shootout Dec. 29, had no answer for the Hornets’ big man early; he scored 11 points in the first quarter as Henley took a 17-12 lead. The Hornets kept the momentum going in the second quarter, leading by as much as 11 before Cooper Rothenberger hit a layup at the buzzer to cut it to 32-25 at halftime.
The Tigers made adjustments at halftime to deny McCreadie the ball inside, which helped them whittle down the lead even further in the third quarter. Henley still led 42-40 at the start of the fourth, but that’s when the wheels fell off. The Hornets committed five turnovers that led to nine Junction City points and missed their first four shots of the final quarter before Owen Harper made it 52-44 with a layup at the 1:43 mark.
Henley shot 14-of-20 from the field (70%) in the first half and 5-of-14 (35.7%) in the second.
McCreadie was named the Henley player of the game after finishing with 15 points (on 6-of-13 shooting), 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals; Owen Harper had 12 points (on 6-of-7 shooting) and 6 rebounds; Aiden Hayes had 7 points, 5 assists and 2 steals; Luke Bennett had 7 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds; Bryson Montag had 2 points and 3 rebounds; and Joe Janney had 2 points.
Cooper Rothenberger led Junction City with 16 points (on 7-of-15 shooting), 2 assists and 2 steals; Keivon Riley was named the Tigers player of the game after finishing with 15 points (on 6-of-13 shooting), 7 assists, 4 steals and 2 rebounds; Avery Thomas had 9 points (on 4-of-6 shooting), 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals; Jack Gambee had 5 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists; Tylen Franks had 5 points and 3 rebounds; Levi Walker had 4 points and 2 rebounds; and Grant Barnes had 4 rebounds.
Junction City outrebounded Henley 27-20 and had 9 turnovers to the Hornets’ 15. They also outscored Henley 20-6 in points off turnovers.
The Hornets will face No. 14 seed Crook County (17-8) in the consolation round at 10:45 a.m. Friday. Junction City will make their third consecutive 4A semifinal appearance against No. 6 seed Marist Catholic (17-7) at 3:15 p.m. Friday.
No. 2 Henley 81, No. 7 Madras 54 (Girls)
A 25-point third quarter helped Henley (22-2) turn what had been a one-point game into a blowout and advance to the 4A semifinal for the first time since 2015.
Madras (18-7) scored the first points of the game on a Katelyn Tanewasha layup five seconds in and never let the Hornets get too far ahead in the first quarter, which ended with the White Buffaloes trailing 21-15. Henley stretched the lead to nine with 6:42 left in the half after a Prestyn Schade free throw, but Madras went on an 8-0 run over the next 1:10 to make it a one-point game.
The Hornets responded with back-to-back threes, and the White Buffaloes never got closer than four points again. Henley led 43-34 at halftime and 68-45 after the third quarter.
Annie Campos led the Hornets with 17 points (including three triples), 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals; Anna Harper was named the Henley player of the game after finishing with 14 points (on 5-of-10 shooting), 15 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists; Jewell Northcutt had 12 points (on 6-of-10 shooting) and 4 rebounds; Senia Campos had 10 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists; Prestyn Schade had 9 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists; Lily Fussell had 6 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals; Mya Mauch had 6 points and 3 rebounds; Kennedi Modin had 5 points; and Bayli Ladner had 2 points and 2 assists.
The Hornets outrebounded the White Buffaloes 50-33 and outscored them 37-13 in second chance points. They also outscored them 23-11 in bench points.
Sasha Esquiro led Madras with 14 points (including hitting 3-of-4 threes) and 2 assists; Katelyn Tanewasha had 12 points and 3 rebounds; Maija Poland was named the White Buffaloes player of the game after finishing with 8 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists; Rylan Davis had 7 points, 8 steals, 8 rebounds and 5 assists; Kalyn Leonard had 6 points and 5 rebounds; LaRhia Stevens had 5 points and 2 rebounds; Brinley Holyan had 2 points and 2 rebounds; and Alisha Yallup had 4 rebounds.
Henley will face No. 3 seed Philomath (21-5) in the 4A semifinals at 8:15 p.m. Friday. Madras will face No. 11 seed Marist Catholic (12-12) in the consolation round at 10:45 a.m. Friday.
