Klamath Falls, ORE– El Niño is expected to start winding down according to the National Weather Service.
The warm and wet weather we’ve been experiencing this winter is expected to transition to an ENSO-neutral pattern this spring meaning it is neither an El Niño nor La Niña pattern in the Pacific.
A La Niña occurs when the temperature of the sea is cooler than average in the eastern Pacific Ocean, resulting in less evaporation, weaker storms, and less moisture in the atmosphere, according to NOAA
The transition from El Niño to ENSO-neutral is expected by April-June, with a 55% chance of La Niña developing in June-August.
In a weather discussion on the Noaa.gov website, they say that even though forecasts made through the spring season tend to be less reliable, there is a historical tendency for La Niña to follow strong El Niño events.
