Henley girls and boys basketball started the second half of Skyline Conference play with statement wins over Hidden Valley. Here’s how each game unfolded Tuesday.
Girls: Henley 77, Hidden Valley 27
As the near-duplicate scores would imply, Henley (17-1, 5-0 Skyline Conference) looked just as dominant against Hidden Valley (5-16, 1-4) Tuesday as they did at Phoenix Friday.
The Mustangs didn’t score until the 3:42 mark of the first quarter, at which point the Hornets had built a 9-0 lead. Henley entered the second quarter up 23-6 and led 39-14 at halftime before an explosive third quarter put them well past the running clock margin at 66-21 going into the fourth.
For the second straight game, all nine active players contributed to Henley’s 77-point total, the highest their opponent has allowed this season. Senia Campos led the scoring with 18 points (all in the first three quarters, including 9 in the third), 7 rebounds and 2 steals; Lily Fussell put up a double-double with 13 points (all after the first quarter), 11 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 assists; Kennedi Modin had 13 points, 4 steals, 3 rebounds and 2 assists; Annie Campos had 11 points, 6 steals, 3 assists and 2 rebounds; Jewell Northcutt had 8 points (all in the first quarter) and 2 steals; Bayli Ladner had 6 points and 5 rebounds; Meredith Brown had 4 points and 2 rebounds; Prestyn Schade had 2 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals; and Mya Mauch had 2 points.
The Hornets recorded 27 offensive rebounds and 24 steals.
Aja LaPan led Hidden Valley with 9 points, followed by Sam Lesher with 7, Taylor Graham with 5, Kaylee Bennett with 3, Nevaeh Morse with 2 and Jasmine Kelly with 1.
The Henley girls travel to Mazama (1-17, 0-5) at 6 p.m. Friday, while the Hidden Valley girls travel to Phoenix (12-8, 3-2) at 6 p.m. Feb. 13.
Boys: Henley 59, Hidden Valley 49
With first place in the Skyline Conference on the line, Henley (12-7, 4-1 Skyline Conference) stepped up defensively, becoming only the fourth team this season to hold Hidden Valley (11-9, 3-2) under 50 points.
In doing so, the Hornets avenged their 54-45 loss at Hidden Valley on opening night of league play Jan. 16.
Owen Harper scored the first seven points of the game for Henley, including a layup that gave them their first lead at 5-4 with 5:40 left in the first quarter. The Hornets never trailed again, entering the second quarter up 17-9 and holding the Mustangs scoreless from the 7:03 mark to the 3:01 mark en route to a 28-16 halftime lead.
Henley maintained a double-digit lead for the entire third quarter and went on a 7-0 run over the last 1:38 of the period to take a 44-27 lead into the fourth. In a scene reminiscent of the Hornets’ near-comeback in the first game against Hidden Valley, the Mustangs chipped away at the lead before scoring seven points in 1:02 to cut it to 50-44 with 2:31 to go. Just as Hidden Valley did Jan. 16, Henley responded, scoring the next six points (including back-to-back buckets by Chris Janney) to effectively put the game away.
Markus McCreadie led the Hornets with his third straight double-double (and fourth in his last five games), putting up 15 points and 11 rebounds. Owen Harper fell just one board short of his own double-double, finishing with 13 points and 9 rebounds. Aiden Hayes, the only other Hornet in double figures, had 11 points. Other contributors for Henley were Luke Bennett with 9 points (all in the first three quarters) and 4 rebounds, Joe Janney with 5 points, Chris Janney with 4 points and 5 rebounds, and Bryson Montag with 2 points and 2 rebounds.
The Hornets recorded 28 defensive rebounds.
For Hidden Valley, Ivan Isley had 14 points, Joshua Iwamizu had 13, Narin Stone had 6 (all in the fourth quarter), Julian Norris had 5, Braxton Brierty had 4, Austyn Klingler had 3, and Presley Noga and Mauricio Mendez each had 2.
The Henley boys travel to Mazama (4-14, 1-4) at 7:30 p.m. Friday, while the Hidden Valley boys travel to Phoenix (14-5, 3-2) at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 13.
