Henley girls and boys basketball wrapped up the first half of Skyline Conference play with wins at Phoenix. Here’s how both games unfolded Friday.
Girls: Henley 77, Phoenix 29
For the second game in a row, Henley (16-1, 4-0 Skyline Conference) held an opponent to their lowest scoring total of the season while torching them for their most points allowed.
Phoenix (11-8, 2-2), which lists six players on its varsity roster, had an even shallower rotation than usual Friday. Alissa Alvarez, who led the Pirates with 16 points, 12 rebounds and 7 steals in their 52-38 win at Hidden Valley Jan. 26, was inactive (JV players Kaia Carrithers and Elia Santos were called up so Phoenix could have substitutes).
Henley made things lopsided quickly, going up 11-0 in the first three minutes of the game and 24-10 at the end of the first quarter. The Hornets led 41-17 at halftime and 62-20 at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter was played with a running clock, except on free throws.
All nine players who dressed for Henley scored. Jewell Northcutt had 15 points (all in the first three quarters), 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals; Lily Fussell had 10 points (all in the first three quarters), 6 steals, 4 rebounds and 3 assists; Bayli Ladner had 10 points and 4 rebounds; Kennedi Modin had 9 points (all in the first three quarters) and 2 rebounds; Annie Campos had 8 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists; Meredith Brown had 8 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists; Prestyn Schade had 7 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists; Senia Campos had 6 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals; and Mya Mauch had 4 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists.
The Hornets recorded 20 offensive rebounds.
Anabell Delgado, Phoenix’s lone senior, scored 8 points in the first quarter (including two threes) but was held to one field goal the rest of the game and finished with 12. Mira Jacobs-Grigsby also finished with 12 after scoring 7 of her team’s 9 fourth-quarter points. The Pirates’ other scorers were Mae Woodward with 3 points and Lillianna Quintero with 2.
Both teams play at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The Henley girls host Hidden Valley (5-15, 1-3), while the Phoenix girls host Mazama (1-16, 0-4).
Boys: Henley 60, Phoenix 49
Henley (11-7, 3-1 Skyline Conference) watched a 13-point first-quarter lead disappear but clamped down in the second half to hold Phoenix (13-5, 2-2) to their second-fewest points of the season and remain tied for first place in the Skyline Conference.
It took the Pirates nearly five minutes to get on the scoreboard–at which point the Hornets had already built a 13-0 lead–but things started to click for them offensively after their first basket. By the end of the first quarter, Phoenix had trimmed the deficit to 18-10. The Pirates kept chipping away until they took their first lead of the game at 25-24 on a midrange jumper by Brayden Decker with 2:48 left in the second quarter. It turned out to be their only lead of the game, as Aiden Hayes answered 16 seconds later with a drive through the paint to put Henley back on top. The Hornets went into halftime up 30-27.
Phoenix kept things close in the early stages of the third quarter, drawing within 36-34 on a Robin Trenbeath bucket with six minutes to go, but Henley held the Pirates scoreless for the next 4:40 as they went on a 9-0 run.
Entering the fourth quarter with a 45-37 lead, the Hornets held Phoenix scoreless for another four-plus-minute stretch; the Pirates got their first points of the final period on an Amaru Williams three with 3:38 left in the game that cut Henley’s lead to 53-40. Phoenix later scored seven points in 52 seconds to draw within 58-49 with 1:19 on the clock, but by then there was too little time for another comeback.
Markus McCreadie led Henley with 19 points (including 11 in the first quarter), 11 rebounds and 2 assists. Aiden Hayes finished with 18 points (including 8 in the third quarter) and 7 rebounds, while Luke Bennett had 11 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Other contributors for the Hornets were Owen Harper with 7 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists; Chris Janney with 3 points; Joe Janney with 2 points; and Bryson Montag with 3 rebounds and 2 assists.
Henley’s 60 points was their third-highest scoring output of the season.
For Phoenix, Robin Trenbeath had 15 points, Dylan Harper had 11, Brayden Decker and Amaru Williams each had 9 (Williams hit three triples), and Diego Hernandez had 5.
Both teams play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Henley boys host Hidden Valley (11-8, 3-1) with the winner taking sole possession of first place in the Skyline Conference, while the Phoenix boys host Mazama (4-13, 1-3).
