SBLive Oregon and The Oregonian/OregonLive released the 2023 4A all-state football teams Wednesday, with nine Henley players and six Mazama players receiving recognition.
Henley head coach Alex Stork, who stepped down a few weeks after the Hornets capped off a 13-0 season with their third-ever state championship, was also recognized as co-coach of the year. He shared the honor with La Salle Prep’s Dustin Janz, who led the Falcons to an 8-2 record and a playoff appearance after going 2-7 in 2022.
Logan Whitlock was named offensive player of the year and a first team running back after rushing for 1,934 yards and 42 touchdowns while averaging 7.5 yards per carry. The Henley senior also received honorable mention at linebacker, where he recorded 54 tackles (27 solo), two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one sack.
Two other Henley seniors earned recognition on both sides of the ball. Luke Bennett was named first team defensive back and honorable mention wide receiver, while Chris Janney was named first team linebacker and honorable mention wide receiver. Bennett had 49 tackles (17 solo), five interceptions and a fumble recovery on defense and caught 28 passes for 528 yards and six touchdowns on offense. Janney tied for the team lead with 76 tackles (36 solo, also a team high) and had three interceptions, three fumble recoveries (including one for a touchdown) and a forced fumble on defense. He caught 28 passes for 487 yards and seven touchdowns on offense.
Three Henley offensive linemen earned recognition: senior Braeden Morris (first team), senior Emiliano Ortiz-Banderas (second team) and sophomore Jantz Kahl Jr. (second team center). In addition to paving the way for Whitlock to set program records on the ground, the Hornets offensive line allowed just four sacks in 2023.
Senior defensive lineman Cohen Redman received second team honors after leading the Hornets with 14 TFL and 7.5 sacks. He had 47 total tackles (21 solo).
Senior kicker Jaime Pizano also received second team honors after averaging 53.4 yards per kickoff with 23 touchbacks and making 52 of 56 PATs.
Sophomore quarterback Joe Janney, who was player of the game in Henley’s state championship win, received honorable mention. He finished the season with 1,329 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, five interceptions and a 59.2% completion rate while rushing for 801 yards (8.1 YPC) and 14 touchdowns.
Mazama had one player recognized on offense and defense: senior Tyson Van Gastel, who was a first team defensive back and honorable mention quarterback. Van Gastel had 35 tackles (27 solo), 3.5 TFL and two pass breakups at DB and rushed for 1,171 yards (8 YPC) and 18 touchdowns while throwing for 332 yards and four touchdowns at QB.
Senior offensive lineman Armando Galindo also earned first team honors after helping the Vikings put up a total of 4,073 rushing yards (7.7 YPC).
Four other Mazama players were honorable mention: junior running back Kristopher Baldwin, who had 953 rushing yards (8.1 YPC) and 13 touchdowns plus three receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown; senior defensive lineman Zack Atmadinata, who had 13 tackles (six solo), three forced fumbles, 2.5 TFL and one pass breakup; junior linebacker Jack Kaefring, who had a team-high 71 tackles (41 solo, also a team high), 7.5 TFL, three pass breakups and two fumble recoveries with one interception; and senior linebacker Seth McLane, who had 26 tackles (13 solo), 4.5 TFL, one fumble recovery and one pass breakup.
The all-state football teams are determined by a classification-wide coaches vote.
