Henley Basketball: Hornets sweep Klamath Union in pivotal doubleheader

Henley boys basketball vs Klamath Union

Henley girls and boys basketball bounced back from their respective losses to Cascade last weekend to pick up crucial Skyline Conference wins over Klamath Union Tuesday. Here’s how each game unfolded.

Girls: Henley 57, Klamath Union 36

Henley (15-1, 3-0 Skyline Conference) took sole possession of first place in the Skyline Conference with a commanding win over a Klamath Union (11-2, 2-1) team that entered Tuesday’s game ranked No. 6 in 4A by the OSAA computer rankings.

The teams combined for seven points in the first 4:49, but Henley scored six points in the next 49 seconds to take a 10-3 lead. Klamath Union got a pair of buckets in the last 1:18 to cut it to 10-7 heading into the second quarter, but a pair of made threes was all they could manage there as the Hornets took a 26-13 halftime lead.

The Pelicans struggled tremendously with Henley’s defensive pressure and never got closer than nine points in the second half. The Hornets led 40-29 after the third quarter. Klamath Union’s 36 points matched their lowest scoring output of the season (set in their only previous loss, a 10-point decision at Stayton Dec. 27).

Henley’s 57 points was the most the Pelicans have allowed all season (they entered Tuesday’s game holding opponents to an average of 31.4 points), and it was very evenly split. Lily Fussell led the way with 11 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals; Annie Campos had 10 points, 6 steals, 5 rebounds and 5 assists; Jewell Northcutt had 10 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals; Senia Campos had 10 points and 4 rebounds; Kennedi Modin had 6 points and 2 assists; Prestyn Schade had 4 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals; Mya Mauch had 4 points and 4 rebounds; and Bayli Ladner had 2 points and 3 rebounds.

For Klamath Union, Keely Hall had 13 points (including three triples), Kshalee Thomas had 11, Dianara Peña had 4, Erin Garcia and Farrah Zumwalt each had 3, and Andi Harmon had 2. The Pelicans finished with seven made threes.

The Hornets shot a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line, while the Pelicans shot 3-of-16.

Both the Henley and Klamath Union girls play at 6 p.m. Friday, with the Hornets traveling to Phoenix while the Pelicans travel to Hidden Valley.

Boys: Henley 57, Klamath Union 41

Henley (10-7, 2-1 Skyline Conference) never let Klamath Union (6-10, 1-2) gain even a slight foothold, outscoring the Pelicans 18-2 in the first quarter.

The Hornets led 26-3 with 3:46 to go in the second quarter and were up 30-10 at halftime. Klamath Union whittled down Henley’s lead a bit in the third, making it 42-27 heading into the fourth, but the Hornets pushed it to 50-29 with 4:01 remaining. Both coaches began emptying their benches not long after.

Owen Harper put up a game-high 16 points for Henley along with 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Markus McCreadie dominated the post, finishing with 14 points, 15 rebounds and 7 blocks. Luke Bennett was the only other Hornet in double figures, finishing with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Also contributing for Henley were Aiden Hayes with 5 points and 3 rebounds; Finn Charlton with 3 points; Bryson Montag with 2 points and 4 rebounds; Joe Janney with 2 points and 3 rebounds; Peyton Lichner with 2 points and 2 rebounds; and Chris Janney with 8 rebounds and 2 assists.

For Klamath Union, DayQuan McKay had 15 points (including 12 in the second half), Jeff Spooner had 8 (all in the second half), Tony Matheney had 7 (all in the first half), Dashel Geraud had 5 (all in the third quarter), and Malcolm Lassett-Hankins and Bryce Petersen each had 3.

The Hornets severely limited any second-chance opportunities for the Pelicans, grabbing 37 defensive rebounds.

Both the Henley and Klamath Union boys play at 7:30 p.m. Friday, with the Hornets traveling to Phoenix while the Pelicans travel to Hidden Valley.
