Henley Basketball: Cascade sweeps Hornets in non-league doubleheader

Henley basketball traveled to Hidden Valley High School for a neutral site non-league doubleheader against Cascade Saturday. Here’s how both games unfolded.

Boys: Cascade 63, Henley 33

Henley (9-7) just couldn’t keep up with the defending back-to-back 4A champions, as Cascade (11-3) raced out to a 7-0 lead in the first 1:10 of the game.

The Hornets fought back after the Cougars’ initial flurry and trailed 9-7 with 3:44 left in the first quarter, but Cascade closed the period on an 8-0 run to take control. The Cougars led 34-18 at halftime and 55-26 at the end of the third quarter.

Markus McCreadie led Henley with 9 points and 5 rebounds, Aiden Hayes had 7 points and 2 rebounds, Owen Harper had 6 points and 2 rebounds, and Bryson Montag had 5 points and 5 rebounds. Other contributors for the Hornets were Lane Frank with 3 points; Peyton Lichner with 2 points; Chris Janney with 1 point; Luke Bennett with 5 assists and 2 rebounds; and Joe Janney with 4 rebounds.

For Cascade, Kaiden Ford scored 15 third-quarter points to finish with 23 (including four threes), Anthony Best had 17 (including 9 in the first quarter), Roman Farrell and Droiy Comstock both had 6, Andrew Kirschenmann had 4, Landon Knox had 3, and Hunter Anundi and Karsten Sande both had 2.

Girls: Cascade 74, Henley 66

A 30-point game from Annie Campos wasn’t enough as Henley (14-1), playing without Anna Harper and Mya Mauch, lost for the first time this year after surrendering a season-high 74 points to Cascade (10-5).

With the Hornets’ loss, there are now only two undefeated teams left in Oregon: 3A Corbett and 1A Crane.

The first quarter featured 47 points and nine lead changes, with Henley pulling ahead 18-17 on a deep three by Campos at the 1:34 mark. Cascade then broke off a 9-0 run that ended when Campos hit a buzzer-beating triple from the throw-in line to make it 26-21 heading into the second.

The Cougars had an answer for nearly every Hornets basket in the second, never allowing Henley to get closer than two points and taking a 38-35 halftime lead. Campos blew past multiple defenders for the first points of the third quarter with 6:41 remaining, but Cascade held the Hornets scoreless over the next 3:44 as they went up 45-37. Henley got within three after Bayli Ladner made a layup through contact with about 12 seconds left, only for Pearl Pruett to drain her own buzzer-beating triple on the other end to give the Cougars a 51-45 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Again, the Hornets clawed their way back, drawing within 55-53 on Prestyn Schade’s layup with 4:26 remaining in the game. Again, Cascade had a response, scoring eight points in the next 1:15 to take their largest lead at 63-53. Henley made it a two-score game at 65-59 with 1:43 to go but missed three of their next four shots, allowing the Cougars to put the game effectively out of reach with free throws.

In addition to her 30 points (13 of which came in the first quarter), Annie Campos finished with 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals. Lily Fussell led the rest of the Hornets with 10 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals; Jewell Northcutt had 7 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals; Prestyn Schade had 5 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds; Bayli Ladner had 5 points and 3 rebounds; Kennedi Modin had 5 points; and Senia Campos had 4 points and 3 rebounds.

For Cascade, Rozalynn Schmunk had 25 points (including 11 in the first quarter), Maddie Dustin (a Hawaii golf signee) had 20, Olivia Bennett had 14 (including 7 in the fourth quarter), Pearl Pruett had 8, Lexi Newton had 5 and Breeci Hampton had 2.

The Henley girls host Klamath Union (11-1) at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
