The second day of the Sisters Shootout saw another split for Henley; the Hornets girls rolled past Madras, while the Hornets boys were overpowered by Junction City. Here’s how both games unfolded.
Girls: Henley 74, Madras 62
After being held to their second-fewest points of the season against La Grande Thursday, Henley (10-0) got off to a blazing start Friday, taking a 27-11 lead over Madras (4-4) after one quarter and going up 48-28 at halftime.
Hornets head coach Randy Denson said the White Buffaloes switched to a man-to-man defense in the second half, which slowed his team’s offense down a little. Still, Madras was only really able to chip away at Henley’s lead in garbage time; the Hornets were ahead 65-48 entering the fourth quarter.
Annie Campos and Anna Harper were dominant for Henley. Campos fell just short of a fourth straight double-double with 22 points (including 13 in the first quarter), 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals, while Harper finished with 21 points, 12 rebounds and 2 steals. Lily Fussell and Prestyn Schade also approached double-doubles; Fussell had 13 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals, while Schade had 8 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists. Other contributors for the Hornets were Jewell Northcutt with 5 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists; Senia Campos with 3 points; and Kennedi Modin with 2 points and 2 assists.
For Madras, Sasha Esquiro had 15 points, Brinley Hoylan and Maija Poland each had 9, Katelyn Tanewasha had 8, Rylan Davis had 7, Bianca Plazola and Kalyn Leonard each had 4, and Kylee Orozco and LaRhia Stevens each had 3.
Henley finishes the Sisters Shootout against 3A No. 7 Banks (8-2) at 12 p.m. Saturday.
Boys: Junction City 67, Henley 50
Despite being reduced to a seven-player rotation with Markus McCreadie and TJ Chavez injured, Henley (6-4) played 4A No. 1 Junction City (11-1) relatively evenly for much of the game before running out of gas in the fourth quarter.
The Hornets trailed 18-10 after the first quarter but used a 7-0 run to get within 26-24 with 2:43 left in the second. The Tigers outscored them 9-0 the rest of the half–thanks in part to Henley receiving technical fouls on back-to-back possessions–to go up 35-24 at the break.
The Hornets never got closer than eight points in the second half. Junction City led 49-38 entering the fourth quarter after both teams scored 14 in the third.
Lane Frank led Henley with 13 points (including three triples) while adding 2 steals, and Luke Bennett had 12 points and 6 rebounds. Owen Harper came close to a second straight double-double with 9 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists. Other contributors for the Hornets were Chris Janney with 7 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists; Aiden Hayes with 7 points and 4 assists; and Bryson Montag with 2 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Joe Janney, who was injured before Henley’s season opener, made his 2023-24 debut and recorded a block.
For Junction City, Cooper Rothenberger had 18 points, Keivon Riley had 16 (including 12 in the fourth quarter), Jack Gambee had 15 (all in the first half), Levi Walker had 8, Avery Thomas had 7 and Tylen Franks had 3.
