Henley Basketball: Hornets girls blow out 5A Caldera

Opening winter break with their second 5A opponent of the season, Henley (8-0) girls basketball took a while to get going but ultimately rolled to another lopsided win, beating Caldera (1-5) 67-38 Tuesday night.

The Hornets, who are ranked No. 1 in 4A in both the OSAA computer rankings and coaches poll, trailed 11-10 after the first quarter and fell down 16-13 after a Hadley Williams 3-pointer with 6:13 left in the second. They responded with a 13-0 run over the next 3:49 and led 32-24 at halftime.

Henley came out swinging in the third quarter–or, more specifically, Annie Campos did. She scored 7 points in the first 43 seconds of the frame to fuel a 10-0 run that lasted until the 5:12 mark.

The Wolfpack never got closer than 16 points after that; the Hornets led 50-32 going into the fourth quarter.

Tuesday’s game marked the first start for Henley freshman Prestyn Schade, who had averaged 3.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 1.5 assists off the bench in the Hornets’ first seven games. She finished with 4 points, 8 rebounds and 2 steals against Caldera.

“She’s been doing great all year,” Henley head coach Randy Denson said. “I’ve been preaching to our team…we have so much talent, and we’re going to adjust game-to-game based on our scouting report. And credit to all of our girls that they’re great teammates and they’re not worried about who starts.”

Annie Campos recorded a double-double for the second game in a row, finishing with 20 points, 11 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 assists and 1 charge taken. Anna Harper put up 13 points and 8 rebounds, falling just short of a third straight double-double. Other contributors for Henley were Senia Campos with 9 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals; Lily Fussell with 8 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals; Kennedi Modin with 4 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists; Jewell Northcutt with 4 points and 2 rebounds; Meredith Brown with 3 points and 1 charge taken; Bayli Ladner with 2 points and 3 rebounds; and Mya Mauch with 4 rebounds.

For Caldera, Ali Heinly had 13 points, Abigail Hudson had 10, Hadley Williams had 7, Samantha Chandler had 4, and Paisley Waldron and Lauren Russell each had 2.

The Hornets return to action after Christmas at Sisters High School, where they’ll compete in the Sisters Shootout. They’ll face 3A Banks at 3 p.m. Dec. 28 to kick off a three-game weekend.
