OSAA 4A: No. 1 Henley 48, No. 16 Gladstone/Riverdale 7
Henley (10-0) advanced to the state quarterfinals for the third straight season with a clinical win over Gladstone/Riverdale (3-7).
The game was pushed back half an hour because two referees were also officiating Lithia Cascade-Crossroads Challenge games at Oregon Tech that went long. If the delay affected the Hornets, it only did so briefly; after a three-and-out on their opening possession, they got the ball back on the Gladiators 38-yard line thanks to a 27-yard punt return by Luke Bennett. On the first play of the drive, Logan Whitlock took the handoff and ran untouched through the Gladstone/Riverdale defense to put Henley up 7-0.
The Hornets never looked back, getting a 26-yard touchdown run from Joe Janney, a 32-yard interception return touchdown from Mark Carpenter (his seventh interception of the season) and a 33-yard touchdown from Bennett on a short pass from Janney to build a 28-0 lead before two minutes had elapsed in the second quarter.
A lengthy drive from the Gladiators, who employed a slow-paced offense that used almost the whole play clock before each snap, took up most of the second quarter and ended with a 4-yard touchdown run by Fynn Brechbiel. With 9.5 seconds remaining in the half, Gladstone/Riverdale sent the ensuing kickoff toward the sideline to prevent a return. It went out of bounds, and Henley opted for a rekick.
Kicking off from their own 35-yard line, the Gladiators sent the ball bouncing over the middle, where Kyle Nichols caught it at his own 45-yard line and returned it to the Gladstone/Riverdale 45-yard line. With 3.9 seconds on the clock, the Hornets lined up to run a play.
Thinking Henley was going to throw it deep, the Gladiators put four defensive backs on the goal line. Instead, the Hornets called a designed run for Joe Janney, who made multiple defenders miss as took it all the way down the left sideline for a 45-yard touchdown run to put Henley up 35-7 at halftime.
A 2-yard touchdown run by Whitlock in the third quarter and a 7-yard touchdown run by Jeremiah Brunick in the fourth quarter were the second half’s only scoring plays.
Henley will host No. 9 seed Junction City (8-2) in the state quarterfinals at 7 p.m. next Friday.
OSAA 4A: No. 7 Mazama 24, No. 10 seed Pendleton/Nixyaawii 6
Coming into the playoffs immediately after losing back-to-back games for the first time in 10 years, it wouldn’t have been far-fetched to think that Mazama (7-3) might be in danger of being upset. But the Vikings handled business, holding Pendleton/Nixyaawii (7-3) to their lowest scoring output of the season.
Tyson Van Gastel completed 4-of-10 passes for 66 yards and a touchdown while rushing for a team-high 88 yards and two touchdowns on 16 attempts. Van Gastel was one of five players to run the ball for Mazama, and each of his completions was to a different receiver.
Van Gastel scored on a 1-yard run with 2:26 left in the first quarter to put the Vikings up 7-0. After a scoreless second quarter, the Vikings got a 32-yard field goal from Jonathan Laitinen and a 7-yard rushing touchdown from Van Gastel to go up 17-0 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Buckaroos found the end zone with 5:36 left in the game as Colson Primus hit Benito Jennings for a 38-yard touchdown pass, but Mazama answered with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Van Gastel to Ryan Hayden with 2:08 on the clock. The Vikings held Pendleton/Nixyaawii to 162 yards of offense and only six first downs.
Friday’s win was the 85th at Mazama for head coach Vic Lease, moving him into a tie with John Mathis for the most in program history. Lease will take sole possession of the record if the Vikings can avenge their regular season loss to No. 2 seed Marist Catholic (9-1), who they’ll travel to face in the state quarterfinals at 7 p.m. next Friday.
OSAA 3A: No. 5 Lakeview 54, Scio 0 (Saturday)
Lakeview (9-1) took a 40-0 lead with 3:42 remaining in the first half as the Honkers rolled to their first 3A playoff win since 2011. The 54-point loss was Scio’s (7-3) worst since 1987.
Lakeview quarterback Benny Johnson threw for two touchdowns and ran for two touchdowns. Running back Brandon Markus had a rushing touchdown, a receiving touchdown and recovered a blocked punt in the end zone.
Lakeview will host No. 13 seed South Umpqua (7-3) in the state quarterfinals next weekend. The Honkers beat the Lancers 28-16 at Lakeview in Week 3.
OSAA 1A[8]: No. 5 St. Paul 54, No. 12 Crosspoint Christian 12
In their first playoff game in school history, Crosspoint Christian (3-5) hung with St. Paul (9-1), which made the state championship game last year, for about a quarter and became only the third team this season to score on the Buckaroos.
On the first drive of the game, the Warriors got the ball inside the St. Paul 10-yard line before the Buckaroos’ Branson Cook picked off a Kody Sparks pass on fourth-and-goal. On the very next play, Clay Smith took a handoff 96 yards for a touchdown to put the Buckaroos up 6-0 after an unsuccessful 2-point conversion.
Crosspoint Christian evened the score on their next possession after a 5-yard touchdown run by Chase Bacus. However, St. Paul answered immediately with a 51-yard touchdown run by Cook. The Warriors turned the ball over on downs on the ensuing drive, and the Buckaroos ran away the game from there, scoring a touchdown on every possession. Crosspoint Christian got their second touchdown in the third quarter on a 3-yard run by Bacus.
Sparks completed 12-of-17 passes for 166 yards with an interception. Bacus finished with 57 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries plus six receptions for 83 yards.
St. Paul will travel to No. 4 seed Imbler (8-1) in the state quarterfinals at 1 p.m. next Saturday.
OSAA 1A[8]: No. 8 Perrydale 52, No. 9 Bonanza 14 (Saturday)
Bonanza (4-6) allowed its second-most points of the season. Perrydale (8-2) will travel to No. 1 seed Lost River (8-0) in the state quarterfinals at 12 p.m. next Saturday.
